is T-bud graft better than Veneer? How does Veneer graft really look like? Can we do bark graft on Mangoes?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Parafilm Experience / Issues of Cracking
« on: April 09, 2012, 01:58:43 PM »
This is my first time grafting. I read here where some folks suggest stretching parafilm before applying to the cleft or bud union areas. I did that, and 24-hoyrs after bud eye was inserted into the root stock, the parafilm had cracked open. In my opinion Parafilm is simply not a good medium for grafting althogh it may work. It does not that "Grow and Stretch with me" capabilities that Buddy Tape may have.  I was amazed how quickly Cherimoya tree's branch started to heal/swell 24-hrs into grafting that it cracked parafilm due to excessive stretch.

I got this monster roll so I am now using it a lot, stretched and tight closer to the union and then not so stretched on outer layers.

I have already ordered Buddy Tape (for me and few folks in our group), hope to have it within a week. Has others experienced cracking in parafilm?

Great information on rooting Guava's there.  I will give it a shot. My problem is that I got 6 healthy matured guava trees in planters and I do have more space but would rather have multiple guava's on matured trees so the space saved could go for new tropical fruits that I am actively pursuing.  I did graft a lot of guavas in last week, lets see what happens.

On another note, will this rooting technique work for Lychees? Anyone?

ok, we are one short of 8 but  I just ordered it for us. I had to send business check to get it. as soon as I receive it I will post here so you can paypal me.

Thanks

I am getting my hands clean on my 48 roses T-budding everywhere, after I got several cleft grafts and few bark grafts. I think its better to learn now before messing up with my mangoes that are next in line (waiting for scion).

Anyway, grafting has been a lot of fun and I got to prove to my wife that its well worth the effort  :-[

SWRancher...I wish that was the case for me... But all I had was a light drizzle yesterday morning. Its been SO dry here, we had a brush fire a week ago about 1/4 mile from the house. Last time I had any measurable rain was the end of Feb.  :(

Harry, thanks for putting it in that perspective...I feel a little better about all those lost mangoes  :)

Very well said. Also the fact that those that still remain on the tree would get VIP treatment of resources and nutrients from the tree now, thereby making these warriors the most delicious fruits.

One interesting fact in the manual, Seedling trees live longer (about 15 years) than grafted trees (maximum 10 years).

If this infact is true and you get most production past year 6, then at every 3-4 years you need to add a new tree to keep up with aging.

Question for experts. On Roses all the videos I saw talk about T-Budding, not inverted T budding. What is the difference in the two (inverted vs non-inverted) in terms of graft take? Will T-Budding be better than Inverted T-budding? or it doesnt matter?

Tim, didnt realize in post above that your veneer graft was lost too. its hard to find this scion wood.  On another note, I am not an expert but from reading several grafting techniques, most talk abut doing T-budding in mangoes. I am going to try that once I get my hands on it. On your bud graft, I dont see flaps of bark of root stock covering your scion wood. Would that help.

Joe, with high winds blowing and your canopy relying on the stems and branches, do you not think that winds will put pressure on the canopy and canopy will put pressure on your scions its sitting on?  Another workaround would be those paper bags that you had, simply cut few holes at top of each bag, heat rises to top and will dissipate from the bag instead of getting trapped.  Just a thought.

1463
I am in California and if anyone of you from Florida could spare a scion wood of Maha Chanok for me, I would really appreciate it. I wish I could participate in this trading group. I got Moringa seeds that I can trade if anyone wants it. Its a dwarf Moringa.

Tim, I hope your veneer graft takes it. I went nuts in practicing my grafting lack of skills with Cleft, Veneer, Bark, and t-budding of roses, guavas, chrimoya, plums, apple. Will see how it goes. Some Roses, Guavas, and Cherimoya look promising, but I am not removing any tape.

This damn So. Cal weather is killing me. Today it got very cold again and on Saturday we will hit 80's. My grafts are going thru motions I guess.

I am still waiting for Maha Chanok Scions from MangoDog sometime this month when he prunes.

Now you really scaring your neighbours Joe, LOL. here is my tree, it gets some shade and has humidity from nehgibour watering their plants daily.

1466
Joe, I came across your older post on Gardenweb too, nice looking red guavas here. I got 6 mature guavas but all are white, some are asian, no way to ID them yet.  However, if you dont mind, could you push some best red guava scions over? I will pay you $5 via paypal for all the shipping you sent including cherimoyas.

Thanks

We got 3 interested so far. Myself (2), Adam, and Ed.  Anyone else? We need four more folks so I can order.

OK, I did bark grafting of Guava and Cherimoya trees today.

My offer above of $20 is not for making money, just trying to make sense and have our group enjoy, remaining ones I can throw on Amazon and sell cheaper than those who are ripping others. I talked to manufacturer's main distributor and got prices. if you buy 8000 plus rolls, you can get it for $11/ea. LOL

1470
I do the same but Parafilm snaps easily, and then I end up using more than I am suppose to. I got this monster rool that is 2" wide, makes it harder to work with.

1471
So from what I gather.. Buddy Tape is practically the same thing as parafilm except that is it perforated? Is that correct? I still have a few hundred feet of parafilm that I don't mind cutting into strips whenever I need a piece. Maybe when I run out I will buy buddy tape instead.

Something doesnt seem right in that listing. it says 70M, which is 3.28 feet x 70 = 229.6 Feet, Buddy tape is 130' only, Before you buy, confirm, you dont want a knock-off.

1472
Good find! When I was looking for a roll I searched all over and couldn't find a decent price without buying 8 rolls! Now it is popping up every where!

Ed

I have read about buddy tape being perforated and non-perforated. its a choice.

1473
Most if you dont know, Buddy Tape unlike Parafilm that is continuous has strips in rolled form, each strip is 2-3/4" long 1" wide and has best elasticity. This comes directly from the manufacturer. All I am trying to do is facilitate this for us and others at price that most cant get. The same tape from AM Leonard costs over $30 including shipping.

1474
per Roll, I believe each roll is 130', standard roll that comes from Buddy Tape Manufacturer.

1475
Anyone here interested in buying Genuine Buddy Tape for grafting? I can have it to you for $20 plus shipping (actual, which is $3) and not that $9-$10 that most charge.  I need few people to make it happen.

Please post here if interested.
