Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bud Grafting Cherimoya and Guava Trees
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:19:14 AM »
This Parafilm that I just got is quite strong. for some reason the last one I got was just a roll with no packaging, this one seems genuine in original packaging. I stretched it hard and it breaks only if you pull too fast. Slow stretch is quite strong. I will look into your tape recommendation.

I came across Malaysian Red Guava at Lowe's last night. More I read about it more I want to get one. Question for guava lowers/growers, which Pink/Red Guava is the best in terms of best taste, juiciness, sweetness, and soft seeds.

Does anyone has extra scions that could be shared? Right now most Guava's are starting to go dormant or coming out of dormancy. Perfect time to graft as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bud Grafting Cherimoya and Guava Trees
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:06:37 AM »
Has Anyone tried Bud grafting in Cherimoya and Guava trees? I know this method is used exclusively in Roses which are hard to graft, from what I read this type of graft where bud eye is inserted into the pocket right over the cambium layer and bark of root stock is flapped over the scion wood, it sort of gets very tight contavt and moisture control.

Anyone? I will be receiving my scions by this weekend. I want to do it right so I dont lose them this time.
1. I got parafilm tape.
2. Do I need wax OR a good tightly wrapped parafilm would do the job.
3. Do I do Cheft or some other type of graft.

Main question is that my mature Cherimoya tree trunk is about 12" in diameter, I want to graft onto the trunt on two sides so I get low branches of new variety.  What would be best way to achieve that graft? Any pictures for reference would be helpful.

Joe, thanks for sending out the scions. On how you got paper bags over scions, I second the thought that scions will bake over 100 degrees when we hit 80 outside. Best is to do a wrap of scion on papafilm tape.

Anyway, I am trying to get buddy tape wholesale and if i am able to I will share it with you folks at cost.

Hi JF, any chance of getting a budwood of this baby?

1481
here is my tree that I pruned. waiting on Scoins now to graft onto.

Joe, you got any scions left or all done?

1482
Ethan, I would be interested in some of the grafted tropical fruits. would love to see what you got there.

1483
Joe, not trying to highjack the thread, but I prumed mine the same as yours except I cut some of the smaller branches too. I will post picturs. It had grown over 30' tall and one branch went up like a pole. Now it looks like I may get a canopy, I hope so. Waiting for scion wood now from you and Alex.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is This Scion Too Late to Graft?
« on: April 02, 2012, 04:00:53 PM »
Thanks Adam, this piece is abot 11" long and has about 7 steps 1-1.5" apart with buds. Can I cut it in two pieces and try two scions? It will have at a min. 2 buds or 3 buds but length of scion aftger wedging would be only 4"-5"

This time I made sure my lychee and longan scions were well covered. I hate weather here, its a see saw with rail (welcome), gets cold (low 40's) and to mid 80's. wild swings.

Oh, forgot to mention, I tried grafting longan onto longan seedling, and lychee onto longan, I am told that these dont graft well, will see. As I am in more for learning so it would be good experiment. if grafts take, I will post here. I read an article that said that lychees can be grafted onto longans, trick is to have scion that is ready to pop and root stock that is actively pushing for growth, and do a cleft graft towards 1/3 of the section.

I grafted pink guavas onto my white asians, various annonas on to my cherimoya, plums on apricots, pear on apple, apple on pear. all dormant right now. everything was cleft graft with parafilm.

On, I also grasted roses, cleft method and got few that took graft within a week and are growing vigrously. at least got some success.

While trying to graft I have found similar conditions in Cherimoya (some branches) and more so in Apricot plant. When I cut the stem/branch of root stock, most of the times I see nice cleaa green/white surface of the cut the section.  However recently I found this dark black inner part of cut sections of branches/root stock. Is this some kind of disease or abnormality?

The sections in question range from 1/4" thick to 3/8" thick branches.  Not sure if graft will take on these kids of branches. Thoughts on why this dark inner is found in some branches while not in others.

No. 1 for me is Cherimoya from my garden. Unbeatable!

1491
is it typical for the lower trunk to show up like its on this picture? It appears that two root stocks got fused together. no?

On another thought, what I am seeing in my matured longan tree, flower pennicles from last year turned into dormat stems and then got a breakout this year. can these be used for grafting? I am going to try to graft my lychee on longan if it works. some say it might and some say it wont. Regardless both Longan and Lychees are hard to graft anyway.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Sweetheart Lychee
« on: March 30, 2012, 03:54:13 PM »
Here is my poor sweetheart grafted Lychee, it lost all leaves, then went thru bloom flush, now I see little breakouts, not sure if this is new growth OR plant fighting to put blooms. Planted in Sep 2011. Thoughts on what to do?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Alphonso Mango Bloom
« on: March 30, 2012, 03:52:03 PM »
Here is picture of my Alphonso Mango that is blooming, The top most bloom is turning black, fungus?  Anyway, I put it in ground in Sep 2011. This is really its first season.

Its quite 7' tall tree and did not go thru any growth flush, just blooms since planted.

1497
got it, thanks. I already got Parafilm ordered so I might stick with it. Will keep in mind next time.

1498
Adam, you got $0.50!  ???

Love the green leaves of your sapodilla. I will wrap my scions tonight, not going to take any chances. Thanks for the tip. Also, on Amazon folks sell buddy tape, like $1.8/roll and ask for $8 shipping and then you got real parafilm. I ordered parafilm this time. Thoughts?

1499
I sealed 1" above and below the graft union. I did not wrap the entire length of scions as I did not know if I needed to wrap the scion completely in parafilm OR put a plastic bag over it like some do. My reason for it was that we hit mid 70's to 80's and I was worried about scion getting cooked inside the bag.

Should I wrap the scion?

1500
I check my grafts daily and once a week I use my fingernail to scratch the top end of scion to see if its still green and alive. so far so good. I will definitely let all know how it progresses. I dont have hope unitl we start hitting 80's here which could happen next week.
