Anyone have an idea of what this might be?

I found it in a small container with a pitanga (surinam cherry) I planted several years ago.  Sometimes when I have seeds that don't germinate, I put them into pots with other plants.  In this case, there was a label in the container - but it was sun faded and I couldn't make out a single letter.  I repotted into its own 1gal container, but want to label it with something other than "mystery" if possible.

Any help figuring out what this might be is appreciated...

I have this one Inga remaining from 3 different types of Inga fruit I received several years ago... can't find my notes on the fruit, and I moved the seedlings around so many times there is no way my notes would have held up anyway.  Two of the fruits (pods) were long, one was short and fat... again, no idea which this seedling came from.  It was about 8' tall before I topped it and cut back some of the branches.  Hope someone can help ID.

Got these seeds labeled as "Spirito Santensis" (correct spelling is Spirito Sanctensis is that what this is?

I have two small jabos (approx 3.5 -4 ' tall).  Not sure which variety they are and if they are the same.  Any help would be appreciated as I plan to add more soon and also want to get nametags made for them.

Here are some photos from most recent trip to Brazil, got back this morning.  Spent half the time in Rio and the other half in Espirito Santo.  I wasn't expecting to find much fruit, but was happy with what I did run across.  Also managed to get some seeds back this time (last year DFW Customs took my seeds and forwarded to APHIS via FedEx - and they went missing; FedEx paid me for the mistake, but it didn't make up for the loss of time)

Jaca (Mole) - courtesy of this uncle - eaten raw and made into a juice

Papaya - we planted last July from seed, already 10' tall, but some strange looking fruit

Palmito - his neighbor has a palmito plantation, we ate the palmito with our BBQ... I'm not a fan


Maracuja / passion fruit - my brother in law had this growing on his fence... sweet pulp, looks like papaya




Araza - can you help identify this one?  Close to psidium guineense, flesh is orange, sweet (banana/pineapple) with just a bit of acidity










Jaboticabas - I found a couple different trees with fruit and bought a kilo at the market (separate thread for help ID'ing jabos)


Icecream - Awesome selection of icecream in tropical flavors.  I had jaca this time.




The seed haul - And they made it back this time!

I just picked my first cherimoya from the Campas tree... I decided to weigh it as well, figuring it would be about a pound.  To my surprise, it weighed in at over a pound and a half.  Can't wait to eat it this weekend.

Collected 60+ fruit today from the ground around one of the shrubs... ate more than 10 and there are 51 in the photo below (including the one in hand)... quality is good+ (better than last year, NO hint of "perfume", not sure why the difference).

Just in case you were wondering, there are more than 35 in that bowl.

I was given some seeds of this açaí relative and told the fruit holds similar potential.  The tree itself is very attractive, for those who enjoy palms.

My question is related to the USDA/APHIS "Not Approved Pending Pest Risk Analysis" (NAPPRA) designation.  The most recent PPQ (6-2013) states that all material except seeds is regulated, but the far right column states the plant was put on NAPPRA final list effective 5/20/2013.

Anyone familiar with this list and these rules?  Are the seeds still acceptable to import without quarantine?

I have found, purchased/eaten a lot more fruit than i expected to find during Brazil's "winter", but could use some help from anyone who knows the area in tracking down Jaboticaba (and related, ie Cabeluda) fruits.  I have access to Rio area and Sao Paolo.

This is what I have found so far:

* mangosteen
* mango (lots of variety - from bright orange skin to bright red, purple and all shades between)
* camapu (physalis pubescens)
* papaya (looks like solo, small tasty fruit)
* mamão formosa (very large papaya)
* star fruit (orange sweet variety and yellow acidic variety)
* atemoya (small fruit very good flavor, almost seedless)
* sugar apple
* soursop
* avocado (very large smooth skinned fruit)
* cashew
* passion fruit (yellow, large fruit - the size of cantelope)
* noni
* persimmon
+ all the regulars (bananas, apples, pears, oranges, lime, grape ,strawberry, etc)

I also got to see a 60+ year old jaboticaba (not in fruit or flower) that is 30+ feet tall.  (and a 12 year old tree that was over 15 feet tall)

... If anyone knows the Rio or Sao Paolo area and can point me in the direction of jabo fruits or the people who can lead me to them right now, I would be very grateful.

I started some seeds inside this year, but have had mixed success moving them outside.  All of my papaya (about 18) died; the guava and passfilora did fine; cherimoya has been a mixed bag.


Cherimoya seedlings... I moved a dozen outside and many lost leaves quickly and look "haggard".  I decided to keep the rest inside until I can figure out a better method for acclimating them.  Any suggestions?



The surinam cherry (right side) seeds sprouted quickly - I plan to move them outdoors in another week or so.  (Passiflora seedlings in the left side of the frame; I moved a dozen outside two weeks ago without any signs of stress, with the exception of one that didn't make it.)
