Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kook Lom Krong mango
« on: November 23, 2013, 07:16:16 AM »
I was perusing the "Ultimate mango list"  and came across a few interesting varieties that sounded like they had traits that I desired.  The master list has the Kook Lom Krong mango as:

A dwarf dessert mango from Thailand and describes it as "excellent taste-old variety, not commercial. In Hawaii it is a dwarf like Julie & productive-possible 2 crops/year"

Does anyone have any experience with it before I begin the hunt?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How much fertilizer is too much?
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:27:42 PM »
I currently fertilize with a 8-3-9 with micronutrients on the first of every month and then spray with keyplex 350 on the 15th of each month.  I am looking to add kelp extract into the mix.  Should I replace one of these treatments or add the kelp extract as an additional treatment?

Am I overdoing it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 11 "in ground" spots left
« on: November 10, 2013, 11:42:41 AM »
I have 11 "in ground" spots left for mango trees.  Which of these should I leave in a container and which should get the coveted 'in ground' real estate?  I am looking to plant the best of the best that require being "in ground".  I have already slated 6 for container so that leaves 8 more that need to make the container list.  If it isn't worth a ground spot but will not do well in a container, please note that so I can plan accordingly and give the plant away.  I MIGHT be able to squeeze another 4 or 5 in ground without ruining the large open play area I want to leave for my kids so please note them in order of 1st to deserve a spot in the ground to last.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best "unappealing" mango trees
« on: November 10, 2013, 08:32:09 AM »
In my attempts to get the most amount of fruit trees on my lot without costing my kids a huge open play area, I realized that if I plant beyond my front gate, I can get three more mango trees in the ground.  The problem with that is that it will be accessible from the street by gardeners and hungry neighbors and they will be able to pick from at least one side of the tree without hinderance.  I am looking for your top 3 mango trees that are picked green or small or generally seem like they should not yet be picked when it is really the perfect time to pick them.

What are your best under cover mango varieties that are camouflaged to seem like they are no where close to ready when they are, in fact, perfectly ready?

P.S.  They do not have to be run of the mill, easily found mango trees.  I am happy to scour the earth for difficult to find mango trees to add to my collection

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Trade: Catalina Avocado seed
« on: October 11, 2013, 04:02:05 PM »
I have one Catalina Avocado seed up for trade.

Everything below is from 2 websites and not my personal experience although I do love them.  I would just rather not misrepresent myself

Choquette
'CATALINA' was introduced to Florida from Cuba. It is a very nice mid-season pear shaped fruit that is especially rich and creamy. It is an extremely popular variety here in South Florida in the Cuban community, but it enjoys a cult following with all that have had a chance to taste.
From the perspective of a Cuban-American, Catalina is the standard against all other avocados are compared to. It is indeed a good tasting, creamy avocado.
One thing worth mentioning is the if you can not consume the whole fruit, it can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours without significant deterioration of flavor, color or consistency. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side.
I have a mature tree at home. One of the peculiar things about Catalina is that the leaves are rounder than most avocado trees, so at at times it could give you the apprearance of an almond tree. It is a robust and fast growing trees. I planted this tree a year after a Simmonds and Monroe and the trunk is almost three times the diameter of the other two. To keep it in check I have to do serious pruning every year. The fruit matures in late summer in the 1.5 to 2 lb range. I use the seeds of the Catalina for seedlings due to the strength of the young trees..
I hear stories of Catalina trees having 1000 fruit and being very productive in Cuba. I suspect that 200 miles to the north, soil fertility and a few degrees less of temperature make the difference. The Catalina is not as productive in South Florida as it was in its place of origin. Still it is worth the time and effort to have a tree around.  I have my tree next to a Monroe, B flower, and it produces a decent amount of fruit every year.  Taking into concentration the heavy pruning  I do from keeping the tree from overtaking every thing else in my yard is not bad. Unlike other trees that pruning makes them not flower in the pruned areas, the Catalina blooms, profusely and it sets fruit in the pruned areas.

« on: September 17, 2013, 05:51:51 PM »
I just purchased a 25 pound J-31 jackfruit and have all of the seeds to trade.  Feel free to PM me with any offers.  I would have taken a picture of the fruit but was too excited and cleaned it already.  This is sweet and delicious and even the rag was tasty!

I was fortunate enough to get 'Then Varikka' seeds from both Roy-Ind and Vipinrl and almost all have sprouted.  I have way more than I require and am willing to trade them for other seedlings that I don't have.  Then Varikka is supposedly crunchy and delicious.  These are growing VERY rapidly.  I will try to post some pics tomorrow or the day after.  I think I have 8 or 9 to trade.

What could be the issue and how do I rectify it?  This is my Amber Jackfruit from Australia and, needless to say, I am prepared to do ANYTHING to save it.

I have about 20 Geffner atemoya seeds up for grabs.  I am willing to trade it for anything cool that will grow in South Florida that I am not currently growing.  Ideally, a couple of varieties of papaya may be cool to add to the collection.

I have fruit from a variety that my neighbor got from a miami RFC meeting raffle maybe 20 years ago.  It has bright green fruit, light yellow crunchy flesh, fantastic flavor and the rag is edible.  The fruit seem to grow between 10 and 15 lbs and has a very high ratio of edible pods.  I call it George's Mystery Jackfruit (after him, not me)  If anyone is interested in trading, feel free to pm me.  I will try to post pics tomorrow of the fruit and more when I cut it and perhaps you folks can help me solve this 20 year old mystery.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / unhappy Jackfruit
« on: August 20, 2013, 07:54:37 AM »
I purchased a couple of Jackfruit plants from a forum member but during transit, they spent the day either in his car or mine.  They arrived home looking fine but in the following days this happened:

It may be the 12 hours it spent in a closed car or it may be adjusting to my well water.  Truth be told, I have no idea what it is but I just want to correct it.  I feel like Jackfruit Kevorkian.
