Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Malay apple
« on: June 27, 2015, 06:49:16 PM »
20 years from seed?  Is that par for the course?  I am a couple of years in on 2 plants and may want to rethink it if I have to wait until 2033 to enjoy some fruit.

IMHO enjoy is a mighty strong word to use for a malay apple...maybe being from the Caribbean, you would disagree...definitely not worth the space another sweet tart, fruit punch, or pineapple pleasure tree would take up

Perhaps the nostalgia factor plays a part as every bite reminds me of a different time where worries were few and free time was abundant but for my money, not much is as refreshing on a hot day than biting into a malay apple.   In a few years I will be posting pics of piles of mangos I am throwing away because of the abundance so another Sweet Tart or Pineapple Pleasure, while awesome, are not needed.  I would happily use the real estate for a malay apple if I can ENJOY one before I am feeding them to my grandchildren.  20 years is a very long time before the first fruiting.  Does anyone know what par for the course is?

Brett,

Let the haters hate my friend.  Your descriptions are at a whole other level so keep them up.  On a side note, I happen to know that you can no longer find a maha in south florida.  Sheehan filled a u-haul with them after reading the phallus comparison and is greedily hoarding them.

Flavor grenade is the perfect description of both Fruit Punch and Pineapple Pleasure, both of which, in my opinion, are top 5 mangos.

The cocktail loquat that you sent me arrived in perfect condition and was nothing less than a work of art.  This will get a prime spot in my yard.  Thanks again Adam

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Angie Is Not a Top-Tier Mango?
« on: June 20, 2015, 12:02:22 PM »
I got a couple from BSBullie and I found them to be middle of the road.  Granted 2 over ripe Angies is not a sample size to make a full fledged opinion but I am not optimistic based on what I have seen so far.  It would have a tremendous uphill battle to be considered top tier in my books

Does anyone know the vigor of Juliette?  Is it a small tree?  Production? Disease resistance?  Thanks in advance....A nursery near me in Longwood is selling Juliette

My Juliette is compact, bushy and currently laden with fruit.  I haven't tried it yet but planted it based on my love of Julie and dislike of dealing with issues related to a Julie in S. Florida.

Out of Seacrest, Fruit Punch and Guava, my personal favorite is fruit punch.  That being said, you really can't go wrong with any of them

Adam,

You may get more takers if you offered a cool tree/budwood/fruit instead of a cash prize.  That usually gets me off the couch.

Don't know what it is but if you have it, I'll trade for it

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Orange Sherbert Mango Budwood

The fruit is fantastic and, to me, a similar taste profile to the lemon zest.  I'm not sure actual budwood or plants are available.  It is my understanding that some faux OS's (mislabeled LZ's) have been being passed around but no legit OS's.

Sheehan has raved about toetee.  When they are in season you will never catch him without a toetee in his mouth.

You have your focus and I have mine Mr Clean.  I like to see my list grow and am willing to make the trek out to West Palm if I can add an oddball mango to my collection but, the fact is, any oddball that comes to that sale would be via one of the members of this forum so I will simply wait for something to have something that someone wants and trade.  Thanks for the heads up

George,
I will probably working for Excalibur at the sale, so if I see any rare mangos I will make sure to take a picture of it and sell it to someone else before you can get it.

You expose the fact that a man has micro-phallus one time and now he refuses to hoard the good mangos for you.   Thats pretty petty there Sheehan.  You're bigger than that . . . (as long as "that" is a mushroom cap)

My Venus has gigantic leaves.  Like nothing I've ever seen on a mango tree.  I will try to post some pics later.

If you don't have a telescoping cut and hold, you're suffering needlessly.

The 6 - 10 foot ARS is my favorite. Works for mangoes, canistel, lychee, loquat, etc, etc. You can pretty much retire the ladder with one of these babies (cept for the awkward stuff like jackfruit or mamey sapote..). If you have a gigantic tree (like my canistel), a ladder plus body height plus the picker will get you 25+ feet into the canopy.

(Don't get the amazon prime one -- it's only 4 - 7 foot)

PS -- these are made in Japan (quality)

Won't the fruit just fall to the ground and then I have to go searching for fallen loquat?  This is certainly the best option thus far but it is not perfect.  How did no one come up with something to harvest small fruit easily yet?

Looking for the path of least resistance to pick those that are high out of reach without having to drag a ladder out to the back of my property.  So something that extends my reach but also catches the fruit so it doesn't plummet to the ground.  Thanks for all of your help.

Rob,

While Sheehan is undoubtedly a tool, he is not of the useful variety

What is a good tool to pick loquat?  Include a link if possible

Last chance before I plant these beauties at a cousins house.

For the "young"tree formulation,  the minors are every bit if not more important than the NPK.  Do you know what is proposed with respect to the minor package?  How about the fillers?

Sheehan specializes in the minor package.  Perhaps he should weigh in

You just talked your way out of some delicious death mangos

My Coconut Cream is looking to have a banner year as well.  I hope and pray the majority of what is currently on it remains until maturity.

Put a mango tree above me and return me to the earth.

My only rule:  No budwood for Sheehan from my death tree

I thought I was going to be buried at your feet like an Ancient Egyptian retainer sacrifice?

Being buried at my feet is a privilege, not a right.  You have to earn the ability to curl up at my feet for an eternity.   If I decide to be buried under a tree I wouldn't want you tainting its fruit so you will be buried in an unmarked grave a safe distance away.
