Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sprouting seed with flowers?
« on: April 03, 2014, 12:50:29 PM »
Hi everyone! I decided to germinate TJC mango seed and the stem just released itself free from the insides of the seed today, showing two strange leaves - could these be flowers? They are far too different from the folded young leaves just below.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durio grandiflorus
« on: March 29, 2014, 04:50:49 AM »
Hi guys! So Mike recently posted pictures of rare durio macrantha, which are the first to appear on the internet and is a great addition to internet archives :-) Which leaves only one edible durio specie to completely lack a photo of its fruit and that is durio grandiflorus. I searched everywhere, but the only pictures I could find is pictures of leaves and flowers from last year, which are the first to appear on the net.
Is it because durio grandiflorus is so rare to find (it is called ghost durian, so maybe it is somewhat invisible? :-D) or is it due to the fact, that nobody really care much about this specie? From what I could read, it is possible to find it's fruit on the markets of Sarawak. What do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing banana from seed?
« on: March 28, 2014, 04:14:10 PM »
Hi everyone! I was reading some articles about growing banana and I was wondering - is it really impossible to grow a banana plant from the small seeds you can find inside the fruit? I am pretty sure that my cousin once tried to grow them and now he has many healthy and big plants out of the little seeds. Where is the truth then? :-) I wanted to germinate some seeds of banana variety I really enjoyed, but even if the seeds would succesfully grow, I guess I wouldn't be able to get such tasty edible fruit out of the seedlings right?
Thank you in advance for any answer! :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Safe highest temperature in greenhouse?
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:39:38 AM »
Hi guys!

I wanted to ask you, what do you suggest as the highest, still safe temperature for tropical plants in green house?
I got as far as 36°C today in my little greenhouse which I got for durian plants, so I wonder if that is still all right? I started to vent it a little bit, just in case, so the temp dropped to 31 now. I know it can be much higher in summer days, so I plan to vent it much more during that time, I only didn't expect the sun to come so hot early in the year. :-)
Thank you for any suggestions!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Synsepalum and randia problem
« on: January 18, 2014, 04:47:18 AM »
Hi guys!

In the place where I grow my tropical plants indoors, plants like jackfruit, mango, black sapote and other are thriving, but there are two which are unhappy for quite a long time - miracle fruit seedling and randia formosa. Since I got randia about two months ago, it started to grow these curled small leaves. I had that problem wih other randia seedling I got before and I never experienced it on any other plant.
Synsepalum on the other hand isn't growing at all. It is about three months since I recieved this little seedling seedling and since then, it haven't grew a single leaf. It created a tiny bud about two months ago and I thought it will finally start to push up some new growth, but nothing actually happened.
Do you please have any suggestions how to improve conditions for these plants so they can start to thrive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What artificial light would you recommend?
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:17:00 AM »
Hi there!

We have quite dark winters here in Czech republic and I wanted to buy some light for the plants which needs the light most, so I could turn it on from time to time and provide them the light they need. But I am kind of overwhelmed by the variety of different opinions and differents kinds of lights and techniques. Could you please help to determine which light would best suit my need?
I just want a simple light and have a couple of plants under it, let's say 5-6. These would be smaller plants, max. 1,5 years old, all in pots. Mostly, I want to put under light my durian seedlings.
I don't want to buy any hi-end lights, I was just thinking of a simple light bulb, a mere little support during the winter periods :-)

Thank you in advance for any tips and tricks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is there a way to rescue this syzigium?
« on: November 14, 2013, 03:39:40 AM »
Hi guys! I've got a problem with my syzigium jambos plant for a long time now and haven't found out a way to make it thrive again. To give you a description of what happened before the syzigium started to be sick - this plant was given to me from one of the botanical gardens in far east of our country. It is about 1,5 meter high and I would say about 3-4 years old. I brought it home (transported by car for about 3-4 hours) and gave it a spot in west side of my apartment. It was originally planted in big and super heavy pot loaded just with sand. Right about, let's say 4 months ago, I decided to repot the plant to give it a more rich soil and smaller pot so I could bring it outside where it could catch a better sun. In the pot with the plant was some kind of climbing plant like ivy, covering the entire soil, while repotting, I extracted this plant (it had potato like roots) and found out that syzigium itself have quite a small root system. So I placed it in a smaller pot and while doing so, I did cut off clean part of his bigger root which was growing horizontally and due to that didn't fit to any of the smaller pots. I filled the pot with mix of peat, perlite and pine soil mix - quite a big change from sand. After that, I watered it and placed it outside. After a time, of course due to a fact that I haven't cut off any of its branches to balance the loss of root, it's started to fade it's leaves. After time I figured out my mistake and removed several branches and left only few in the top of plant. Since than, the plant remained faded for a very long time. My friend told me it could be too cold from the roots and that it might have a shock from that. Since the colder temperatures came, I brought it back home, watered it with sligthly warmer water and hoped that the plant will come back to normal. But it did not and it remains faded till know. Some of its leaves are sligthly curled but all of the leaves are alive. Only once in a few weeks, one of the leaves dry out and stay on the branch. I mist the leaves from time to time, but it doesnt help.

Now, I know I made many mistakes during whole the replacement and repotting thing, but right now I only focus if there is chance to save the plant and how to do it.
Would you please have any tip or insight what to do?

Thank you in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What kind of jackfruit is this?
« on: July 05, 2013, 07:37:14 PM »
I bought this small guy today in local vietnamese market. I never came across one of those - could anyone tell which jackfruit this can be please? The pulp, slightly over-ripe, was very sweet and very soft and creamy(almost like durian). I was thinking of artocarpus integer, but does integer has such a small seeds and appears in such small size?
I am sorry for distorted images - uploading from ipad.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why is my jackfruit's leaf always fading?
« on: June 13, 2013, 10:23:37 AM »
Hi there!

My second jackfruit seedling leaf is fading everytime the weather gets more sunnier for an uknown reason to me. His water supplies are sufficient, I am always very careful about that and I doubt that the sun in our location is too hot and strong for him. The second seedling in a bigger pot does not show such signs. Can this be due to a small pot? Also how come that only one leaf is faded (also one leaf under, but only ver mildly), whereas the smaller and freshest one on the top is fine? Could this be because the leaf is young and big, whereas other leaves are big and older or just young and very small? Thank you for any answer!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Psidium flowers won't open properly
« on: June 06, 2013, 02:55:16 AM »
Hi there! So I waited for psidium to bloom and I was happy to see when the flower came out of bud, but I waited for some time and the flowers still haven't open properly. Today I managed to see that some of their petals are turning brown and none of the flower moved an inch - only few rod cells came peering out of a little hole which opened between the petals on the top of the flower. So I started to peel the petals to free the inside parts and some of the rods were already brown and drying off. Does anybody know what could cause this please? Can it be something with light? We had crazy weather last few days/weeks with very very little sun and lots of rains and cloulds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Have you seen a smaller papaya? :-)
« on: June 02, 2013, 09:57:04 AM »
These are photo of the smallest papaya I have ever seen and eaten. :-) Have you ever seen such small, ripe and edible papaya? How come it got so small?

The story behind is, that this little fruit fell from the papaya tree in one of our botanical gardens. I decided to take it with me, although it was partly green and very hard ( I thought it was undeveloped fruit which went somewhat bad and fell down). I stuck this little fella inside my pocket of a jacket, which I put inside of closet after the trip (of course, forgetting about the papaya).
And just today (week after the trip), I went through my personal things to find some important paper - I went to the closet and searched my pockets and found a soft, small item in of them. It was the papaya, all yellow, smelling and looking nice and without all doubts, ripe. So I cut it in half and it had 16 seeds inside, everything fully developed, only very small. Taste of papaya was quite nice, just like papaya should taste. :-)

I am no expert on papayas, so I have no idea if this is common or not, but it was very surprising and nice discovery for me. :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help to ID this plant please
« on: June 01, 2013, 11:58:42 AM »
Could anyone please help me to ID this little seedling? It just grew out of this seed which was there on the surface of the soil inside of a pot in which solandra sp. grows. I got the plant from botanical garden's glasshouse and there were dozens of different plants, so I wonder from which plant that seed might be. :-) The seed's size is around 0,5 cm.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Feijoa - different flowering cycles
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:05:45 AM »
Hi guys!

I have two plants of acca sellowiana in one pot and one is some time ahead with its flowers (more in the pictures below).
I was wondering - since feijoa is heterogamous and needs two plants to produce fruit, will there be any problem in setting fruit? Is there a chance it will be pollinated even with a different cycles of flowering? How long does a feijoa flower last?
I heard feijoa has delicious flowers - so I am wondering if I should try and wait for the fruit or in case there is no chance for pollination due to different flowering cycles, to eat the flowers and enjoy what the plant has to offer. :-)

Here are the pictures of flower buds:

This is the one ahead

This is the other one, which has smaller buds

Thank you for any answers!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wireworms in pots
« on: May 31, 2013, 07:04:07 AM »
Did anyone ever had problems with those? If yes, how do you deal with them?
I am using a mixture of a soil from pine forest and I managed to discover a wireworm in one of my pots from time to time. Once I caught him right in the middle of eating a taproot of my durian seedling.
My last mixture appears to have slight higher amount of wireworms, which I discovered only after repotting my sprouting mangifera seed. I got two more pots containing a randia formosa seed and myrciaria seed. Both had a little root coming out, so I sowed them in the mixture. It has been about 3-4 days and nothing came out of the ground yet. Should I be worried or does it require a little more time than that? I thought about extracting the soil and check for the wireworms, but I don't want to damage the taproots of the seeds, as they appeared very fragile when I sowed them.

Hi there!

I was wondering - PH level of our tap water in the city is around 7,5-8. I have no access to rain water, so I am watering with this tap water on a regular basis. I wasn't aware it might be a problem until now. I have my plants potted in acidic mix of pine forest soil. I usually let the water to sit for about 24 hours. Do you think it might cause any serious problem/damage to my plants in the long run?

I've got these species: artocarpus, myrciaria, durio, psidium, acca sellowiana, randia, mangifera, avocado, citrus, syzygium, drosera.

Thank you for any answer!

Hi there!

I have a question which might be funny but - can I germinate all kinds of seeds in just one moist sterile medium? I have a big kind of bowl where I germinate usually seeds of one kind at a time, but when lots of seeds come into my collection, I am wondering if I could germinate all in one space, only of course somehow divided in the open moist medium (I am germinating in coconut peat). Could some seeds affect others or is it just a matter of space? I keep a lot of space for each of the seeds. Thanks for any replies. :-)

Recipes / Durian coconut smoothie
« on: April 25, 2013, 07:03:38 AM »
I made this out of ripe and very soft durian mon thong - I mixed some of durio pulp (depends how "strong" and distinctive you want to have your smoothie in matter of durian aroma), coconut milk (one usually used for cooking, stored in cans), few drops of vanilla extract, little bit of cinnamon. Mix everything in blender, pour it into a cup or bowl and sprinkle it with grated dark fine chocolate. You can also add fresh mint just to decorate it and eat it afterwards. Very delicious! :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durio sp. export?
« on: April 16, 2013, 09:14:33 AM »
I always wondered - are durio sp. fruit exported somewhere and sometimes or only sold locally? Like durio kutejensis, graveolens etc.
