Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava mango tree..vigorous or not?
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:14:39 PM »

A question for the experts and for those who have seen the mother tree: How vigorous is the Guava mango tree? And is it medium  sized. I have a 3 gallon tree that I have planted close to my neighbor's yard. It is small but just pushed new growth. Think I should transplant it? Maybe wait for the growth to harden and move it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too many male flowers on Sunrise
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:35:43 PM »

I was really happy to see my Sunrise mango tree bloom like never before this year. Unfortunately, it looks like most of the flowers are male and I will end up with just a few fruits. Never seen it that bad on any other variety in my yard. Mahachanok and NDM#4 are great at setting fruit and holding on to them, at least in my yard.

Anyone else notice this with Sunrise?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ambika mango in South Florida
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:38:18 AM »

A friend of mine has an Ambika mango from Zills. It is a  mango hybrid from India, a cross between Amrapali and Janardhan Pasand that was developed by the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture. Anyone else has it? If yes, please shed some light on the growth habit and the taste of the fruit.

My sweetheart lychee tree, which is about 6 feet and in the ground for 3 years, is making way for something productive. If anyone wants the tree and is willing to dig it up, please PM me. I live in Coral Springs.

I bought the tree as a 7 gallon with a couple of lychees on it but the tree hasn't flowered since. I guess it will, if planted where it is cooler than South Florida.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / OK to start fertilizing in South Florida?
« on: February 10, 2018, 04:14:24 PM »

Over the last two weeks, I have seen many of my mango and sapodilla trees push new growth. I am wondering if it is time already to start feeding nitrogen to some of the younger trees?   Or, should I wait until April?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cosavet DF Edge Sulfur for Powdery Mildew
« on: December 30, 2017, 11:23:39 AM »
I recently bought Cosavet DF Edge (80 percent sulfur) for spraying my mango trees during cold spells. It is a OMRI listed fungicide-miticide that is water dispersible and flowable. I was able to mix it with water and spray with my 2 gallon sprayer.

Have a question for the experts. How much sulfur is too much sulfur when spraying? Can too much sulfur impact fruit set? The label says 10 to 30 lbs per acre, but that is of no use for growers like us.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Hass Avocado
« on: November 08, 2017, 10:35:24 AM »
As i have read conflicting reports about the variety here on the Forum,I have a question for the experts: How well does Florida Hass tree do in terms of productivity, taste and disease resistance in South Florida?

I have a Cotton Candy tree for sale. It is in the ground, but can be easily dug up as I planted it only a few months ago. I am replacing it with a 7 gallon of the same variety. Those who are interested, please PM..

Thanks

It is very, very windy out there, but I couldn't resist walking out to take a look at my backyard. My Fernandez custard apple, which is 2 and a half years old and about 8 feet old, is on the ground, uprooted. Two jackfruit trees (Excalibur Red and Mai 1) planted as a 3 gallon last year, look ready to go down. Anything special that I need to do to get them back on their feet?More importantly, will they survive?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango splitting
« on: June 09, 2017, 08:26:07 AM »

The heavy rain that we have had in the last few days has caused splitting of mangoes in my NDM#4, Sweet Tart and Bailey' Marvel.  The worst affected is ST. Anyone else dealing with this problem?

Zills is propagating Son Pari, a hybrid developed in Gujarat, India, The name means "Golden Angel."  However, not much is known about its growth habit, taste or productivity in South Florida. Hoping to hear from the experts..

15
No, it is not because I do not like LZ. Just that the tree I have is too lanky (planted as a seven gallon and about 8 feet all). The tree is in the ground and you will have to dig it up.

Please send me a PM if you are interested.

Reasons:

I have another Sweet Tart tree (holding a lot of fruits at the moment) and I figured I won't need another one. (Planted as a  7 gallon..been on the ground less than a year...pruned as it had lanky limbs.

I have Venus topworked on my NDM #4. (3 gallon..planted last year..has swollen buds)

I let this Pickering fruit when really young.. Since then, it hasn't grown the way I have seen it grow in other places..maybe a change of place will do it good..has tiny fruits on it now)

I need the space to plant Cotton Candy, Little Gem and a Tikal sapodilla..

I live in Coral Springs. Those who are interested, please send me a private message...

Can anyone shed light on the taste and productivity of these varieties? A friend of mine got these varieties from Zills the other day. I was told that they were released earlier this month along with Phoenix, Orange Essence, Seacrest and Providence.

I have a Nam Doc Mai tree that I intend to prune and topwork a couple of other varieties on to. The tree is holding about 15 mangoes now. Will pruning cause the mangoes to drop?

Also, can i graft more vigorous varieties on the tree? I know the vigorous varieties may take over, but I don't quite mind that. Will the vigor of such varieties be affected by the  fact that it is grafted on to a slow grower?

19

I do not know if anybody else has the same problem, but the ground beneath my 6-year old Bailey's Marvel tree is strewn with mangoes that are almost as big as a fully grown Fairchild mango. The tree is known to drop mangoes, but I've never had mangoes this big dropping. What can I do to stop this from happening?  I have been watering the tree heavily.

I have a 3 gallon Marlys mango for sale for $25. Local pick up only.

In May last year, I had Har topwork one part of my Glenn to Edgar. All the four grafts took and grew really nicely. I now have flowers on the branches. Is it too early to let it hold fruit?

22

I have a Nam Doc Mai #4 that is flowering now. It is productive but the fruit is too sweet for my liking. I would like to topwork the tree with a few other varieties..Valcarrie, Lemon Zest,  Brahm Kei Mea and Taralay (if i get budwood) are some of the cultivars I am interested in. Will topworking a vigorous cultivar on a slow growing tree work?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wind damage....
« on: March 27, 2015, 07:42:56 PM »

It was very windy this evening and when I came back from work, I saw about 50-60 PPK mangoes on the ground..not little ones, but ones that were growing nicely..also lost about 10-15 mallika mangoes of the same size and a few of Baileys Marvel...

 :( :( :( :( :(

I have ants going up and down some of my mango and sapodilla trees...my two sapodilla trees were almost totally covered with sooty mold. On Har's advice, I hit them with Safer insect killing soap and Organocide. I also used tanglefoot to stop the ants from getting up the tree, but that stopped them only for a few weeks; they seem to have built some kind of a bridge over the tanglefoot barrier now... the sooty mold is now gone but I still see ant mounds on the soil.. How do I make them go away?
