Tropical Fruit Discussion / Manilita mango...
« on: February 03, 2015, 12:57:31 PM »

I have a spot in my backyard that is ideal for one of the smaller mango cultivars. I already have Pickering and Angie. Not too fond of Cogshall.  I've read that Manilita stays small. How good is it in terms of  taste and productivity?

I have a couple of banana pups that I am giving away. It is a great-tasting variety called Njaalipoovan, originally from India. I live in Coral Springs. Please send me a pm if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peach mango
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:43:44 PM »

A friend of mine gave me a few Peach mangoes a few days ago.  He has two trees of that variety. They are small but taste incredible!! No fiber and much more that just intense sweetness.  I have not seen the cultivar for sale anywhere; I think the size of the fruit is the only reason for that. I am planning to graft the variety on to a couple of my trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kesar and Jumbo Kesar mystery gets deeper
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:27:11 PM »

At the Fairchild mango festival on Saturday, I had the opportunity to meet Richard Campbell for a couple of minutes. I asked him about Kesar and the Jumbo Kesar. The general belief is that the two are the same, but Richard told me that they are two different varieties. I asked him about the Kesar because my tree produced for the first time this year. The fruits, for some reason, stopped growing after they were a little more than half the size of some of the smaller mangoes, say a Fairchild. He said his tree also produced tiny mangoes. I have heard so many good things about the variety that it would be a a shame if the mangoes stayed that small.

Has anyone had the same experience, of mangoes refusing to grow in size? The tree, BTW, is very healthy.

I have a 3 gallon Rapoza mango tree ready to be planted. I've read that it is one of the most sought after varieties in Hawaii. How good does it do in South Florida in terms of production and taste?

I hope I am not speaking too soon, but I feel that the Kesar is going to be a real champion in South Florida. My tree, which I got as a 7 gallon tree from Jeff Hagen, now has a lot of tiny mangoes on them. From whatever i have seen, the tree does not cover itself in bloom like a Carrie, but it holds quite a few fruits.

Also felt inspired to post photos of some of my other trees.

Here is a question for the experts: I have two mango trees topworked with a few varieties like Neelam, Brahm Kai Meu, Fairchild and Zill Indo Chinese..Al the grafts are fairly new..The Neelam, Fairchild and ZIC now have flowers. In the case of ZIC, the  graft is just three months old and the only growth that it has are the flowers.. . What should I do? Let the flowers be or remove them?

Also, Neelam is said to be a late season mango.. wonder why it flowered so early? When you graft new varieties onto a tree, is it normal for them to flower at the same time as the "mother tree"?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A Carrie question
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:31:38 PM »
My Carrie has been in the ground three years. I got about 10 mangoes last year, for the first time. This year, I have about 40, but the fruits are smaller. Is that normal? Should I be fertilizing more?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A few pics from my yard...

Here are a few pics from my yard. As you can see, some of the mango trees have mangos, fruitlets and blooms. Hopefully, that will mean a long mango-eating season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Angie or Maha Chahok?? Help me choose...
« on: March 30, 2013, 10:02:50 PM »

I have a coconut palm that I am going to get rid of due to white flies. I want to plant (yet) another mango tree. The choice is between Angie and Maha Chanok. Taste-wise, production wise and disease-resistance wise, which is better?

Does anyone have a 3G Winterset or Triumph? I live in Coral Springs and am told that they are good producers in South Florida. Does any nursery in South Florida have it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is something wrong with my Coconut Cream?
« on: March 24, 2013, 07:16:35 PM »

The branches of my Coconut Cream are unlike any that I have seen in mango trees. It is a healthy tree and is growing quite nicely, but most of the branches, as you can see, are drooping. Is this normal. If not, what should I do?
