Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Moringa Varieties - Miracle Tree
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:29:21 PM »

In India, the leaves of the Moringa tree, the flowers as well as the pods are eaten. The PKM-2 variety is new and is said to be even better than PKM-1.  PKM-1 does have a shorter life span.

PKM-1 is indeed from India. It is a hybrid variety developed by Coimbatore Agriculture University in Tamil Nadu, South India. It can be raised as a container plant. You can get seeds from www.seedsofindia.com. You can learn more about different varieties at http://www.drumsticksindia.com/aboutus/varieties.htm.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help Identifying My Mango Tree!
« on: March 19, 2013, 02:47:36 PM »

Hi Jeff,

I did get the tree from the nursery you are referring to. It is the lighter color and the shape that made me wonder as well. Hopefully, the fruit is as tasty as a Glenn. The mangoes are mostly in clusters of three; is that typical of a Glenn?
Doesn't match the mangoes on my glenn. It almost looks like a cross between glenn and valencia pride :-). The color and the belly aren't right. If you got it from a nursery whose name starts with 'E', then it may well not be a glenn. Here are mine from today for reference.

Thanks.
I think that is a Glenn.

I hope it is, because I love the taste of a Glenn. The mangoes however are lighter than most of the Glenn mangoes that I have seen.

These are pictures from one of my mango trees. I was told that this is a Glenn, but it looks markedly different from the Glenn mangoes that I have seen. Is this a Glenn after all? If not, what is it?

Hi All,

I am Arun, a new member but not new to the forum as it is one of the websites I visit more than a few times every day  I live in Coral Springs and feel privileged to know some of the forum heavyweights such as Noel Ramos, Jeff, Patrick ( I am the one who got the Molix 7 gallon tree from you two weeks ago) and Rob (thanks for helping me pick a grafted Bangkok Lemon). Hopefully, I will be able to meet the others in person sometime soon.

The 7 gallon Coconut Cream that I got from Jeff last year flowered a few weeks ago. It is pushing new growth right now. I am yet to taste the mango but everyone that I talked to recommended it.

The mango trees I have are Coconut Cream (from Jeff and flowering for the first time), Carrie  from Excalibur (it has about 30 fruits now and has flowered again), Bailey' Marvel - Excalibur (it has a few mangoes and is flowering again), Duncan - Excalibur -(planted last year and fruiting already), two Pickering trees - from Jeff -  (one has about 10 mangoes and the other younger one has 2-3), Glenn - from Excalibur - (fruiting for the first time this year), Mallika (flowering for the first ime this year), Keitt tree (from Jeff) that flowered for the  first time this year, a Lemon Meringue tree that gave me fruits for the first time last year but has done nothing this year, a Nam Doc Mai # 4 (from Jeff) and a very healthy-looking Kesar (again from Jeff) that has been dormant for a while but is now pushing new growth.

I also have a Pace and Pantin mamey Sapote (thanks to Jeff), guava, Neem, a hasya sapodilla (Excalibur) and a Molix (from Patrick). An Abiu seedling tree,  a grafted Bangkok Lemon and a seedling Excalibur Red jackfruit are waiting for their turn to be planted.

I will post pictures of my trees soon.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Kesar Mango
« on: March 12, 2013, 09:56:04 PM »

I was born and brought up in India but in my more than 35 years of living there, I was never able to taste a Kesar or an Alphonso mango because all the mangoes were being exported. In the U.S., the Kesar mango sells online for more than $5 a mango. If the Kesar turns out to be productive in South Florida, I will be one happy person. Maybe a rich one too.  ;)

Thanks for the video. I am Arun, a new member. I understand what is being said as I hail from Kerala, a state in South India. The language spoken is Malayalam.

The owner of the farm says it is a 75-year old rambutan tree in his house that inspired him to cultivate and sell rambutan trees. The durian and pulasan, he says, were introduced from Malaysia. He sells 3-year old grafted rambutan trees  for Rs 300, which is $6. The other trees cost even less - $2.5 for Durian and $5 for Pulusan. The rambutan sells for about Rs 250 per kg, which is a little less than $2.5 for a pound.

Thanks, William..

The leaves of my Kesar too are dark green and blemishless, as you said. The only thing it has to do now is to flower and produce fruits. I will wait.

My CC has droopy branches; Jeff said that is how it usually is. Is your CC also that way? As you said, the leaves are much lighter compared to Kesar.   I love the coconut tinge in Pickering and I am told it is more pronounced in CC..

I am waiting to taste CC for the first time and have high expectations.

Thanks, Jeff. It feel nice to be here!
