I think figs like alkaline soil and there are some dwarf types.

Maybe they will help to keep the fruit thieves away:)

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out.

Have you had any problems with bugs this year? The spider mites have been driving me crazy this year:(.  Do you have a favorite products that can be used on smaller indoor/outdoor Edible plants? Gotta be safe my pets get into everything:)
Thanks

Unless something has changed Epicenter Nursery won't send anything out of state.

I almost got to try stewart avocados last year, but the squirrels got them first:(. ALL of my older avocados are in bloom this year and I am going to get a ultrasonic repellent to try and keep the squirrels away:)

I've heard many different things from sunburn to waters P.H. I've seen the same thing with some of mine in pots and some avocados do lose some leaves seasonally. I started adjusting the P.H. of my water when I didn't have any saved rainwater and it seemed to make a huge difference for me. But I am a novice so hopefully someone who really knows what they are doing can give you some advice.

Believe me I wouldn't have any problems plugging those fruit thieves, if I could get away with it. I have never had a problem with them and my citrus? Maybe because I am far enough north and nobody else in the area grows it, so maybe they don't recognize mine as a food source. I have naval oranges, mandarins, Meyers lemons, ponderosa lemons, tangerines and a tangelo. They do currently raid my plum, pecan, and peach trees though.

Sadly, my wife would probably use that trap on me, if she caught me... OUCH

Thanks for all of the replies, it looks like I am going with one of the ultrasonic devices. I will start researching them and pick one. Wifey won't allow me to replace her children, ( Chihuahuas ) or use any lethal methods on the squirrels so that seems to be my best alternative:)

Although some people might call them rats... Will the ultra sonics bother my chihuahuas?
P.S. I wouldn't mind if it kept my neighbors kids away:)

bsbullie seems to have a suggestion that might work and fits the needs nicely, ( Cheap and little labor). So the next question is, has anyone used any of these ultrasonic units and if so how effective were they?
Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / squirrel protection

Hi, I am trying to start early this year and get a jump on the inevitable Squirrel Invasion. Last year they got my first avocados before I did  >:(, hate those furry #@&^*(%$... Anyway I am looking for the cheapest least labor intensive protection I can find to keep my crops for myself. Obviously we have plenty of other critters here who are more than willing to steal my fruit, but the squirrels seem to be the major offenders. If I had the funds I'd have drones with lasers patrolling my fruit trees twenty four seven ;D. But sadly I don't have that kind of money, I do have lazy chihuahuas that look at the squirrels but that's as good as it gets. I am open to all suggestions that don't include poison or guns.
Thanks

I'm not sure about the mexicola, but you better make sure you have plenty of room for the other two. From what I've read they get huge.

Could be, although I think it would be accidental at best since they don't seem to collect pollen like the honey bees do. I also have honey bees, lady bugs and assorted other small bugs flying around.

Hi, My avocado trees are in bloom now and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed how much red wasps/hornets? seem to love the blooms? They don't appear to be hurting them, I assume they are after the nectar. With our mild winter the bug population is exploding here.I don't recall ever seeing so many insects before, both bad and good ones.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Creamhart avocado

Truly saddens me to hear about lost cultivars. This is another example of how important it is to share scions and seeds with others. I do hope a Creamhart shows up. I've been looking for a Ibis avocado scion for a couple of years now with no luck. The Epicenter in California had a scion but I don't know if it survived. The original tree was cut down and removed from what I've been told.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Multi-rootstock avocados?
« on: March 13, 2016, 12:33:21 PM »
So far I've only done cleft grafts. I tried hass seedlings and the local Mexican avocado seedlings,(not Mexicola). They never worked out for assorted reasons, admittedly some of it was me, (bad eyes and hands aren't as steady as they used to be ::). What has worked out the best for me strangely enough is the seeds from the Slimcadoes sold at my local grocery store when in season. Personally I only like them in salads but for grafting they are large seeds with a lot of energy and have worked out very well for me. Just out of curiosity has anyone tried the Mexicola and would you recommend it as part of your collection?
Thanks

Right now everything's in super big pots,( My poor back) and I move them during the winter and cover under a big frame and tarps with floodlights during the freezes. After they are large enough, into the ground on the south side of the house. I am thinking about moving though, perhaps to a bigger piece of property on a hill. Of course a lot depends on what my wife will let me get away with ::)

Well I have several avocado trees now. I live in Conroe Texas, just north of Houston it was considered 8B, but after this winter they might change that :) Ha,ha just kidding on the climate zone change believe me the mild winters will suck you into a since of complacency and then whamo super hard freeze. I've been through a few of them over the years and it's a lot of work to protect all of my tropical plants. Anyway back to the topic I will probably just order the tree itself since it is relatively cheap. I do graft trees but I normally save that for the rare hard to find types. I currently have Stewart, Bacon, Brogdon, Wurtz,Greengold,( Turlock mexican unkown),( DelRay mexican unkown), Bonny Doon a relatively new unknown from California with a really nice write up about it and some seedlings from some chance avocados that seemed particularly good at the time, ( I know that doesn't guarantee the seedling will be good) but what the heck I have the time and if it doesn't turn out good well then I have some more root stock to graft to. I will check to see if dongeorgio has any scions that I might want, I am always on the look out for new cold hardy types ;D
