Tropical Fruit Discussion / oro negro avocado
« on: March 10, 2016, 09:04:06 PM »
Hi, just a quick question to those of you who are more familiar with the different avocados. I have looked at the Oro Negro on Top Tropicals website and then one on Rivers End Nursery's website. They look like completely different fruits to me? So are they the same and just look different because one is grown in Texas and the other in Florida or is one a completely different type. And if so who is who and which is the best?
Thanks

It might not be ripe yet. Some avocados can stay on the tree a very long time before getting ripe enough to pick. You could ask Carlos for his opinion, he has an avocado orchard in Florida and has been trying new variety's for years now.

We are just getting our spring flush now in my location. I was hoping someone might have some extras in their refrigerator or be willing to cut some fresh.  :)  It never hurts to ask.

Hi, I am a little confused about the original trees location? The story I read about it stated it was located (in front) of a wine tasting room? The original Bonny Doon winery before they moved. So which one is the real one described by Ellen at the epicenter? Is the grocery store in the former winery's location?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bonny Doon Avocado
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:41:52 PM »
Hi, I was curious. Does anyone have a Bonny Doon Avocado planted in ground? I would like to know how it is doing for you. I was told from someone else that the original tree is in a protected location which leaves the cold hardiness stated somewhat suspect. I would also like your thoughts on taste, productivity and growth.
Thanks

They sell them at Chico Farmers Market – Saturdays year round; Wednesday mornings 7:30 – noon, North Valley Plaza. They also have a website http://www.chaffinfamilyorchards.com/where-to-buy/
If anyone is going to the farmers market and picking any of these up i would be happy to pay for a few fruit or seeds from them.
Thank you.

Hi, it could be to much direct sunlight hitting the unprotected areas of the branch, if there are not enough leaves to shade it.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Gold Nugget Mandrin

I have to admit the ones in your photo look much better than the ones I bought. The ones I got had pale inner flesh and some were dry while the few that were juicy had very little flavor at all. :(

Although I could order one grafted on-line, the heat is already starting here and I'm afraid the grafted plant wouldn't survive the trip. I've lost several fruit trees that way. I thought mangoes came true from seed? I think I read that in this forum but I've never grown one before. The types they have locally are larger varieties and I want the Pickering because of size. It should be easy for me to keep it in a pot and bring it inside during the cold weather.

Citrus General Discussion / Gold Nugget Mandrin
« on: May 06, 2014, 10:54:47 AM »
Sadly disappointed with the gold nugget sold at my local grocer here in Texas. Perhaps they were picked early by (Sunkist) and stayed in a cooler before arriving here in Texas. I have read so many wonderful reviews about them and payed top dollar for the fruit here. Is there a difference between the ones I've read about on-line and the ones sold by Sunkist?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: avocado dwarf
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:45:52 AM »
If a little caddo, (wurtz) is a true dwarf could you use it as a rootstock and graft to it in order to dwarf other varieties? I don't know how well it would do as a rootstock, salt tolerance, root-rot , etc. Perhaps you could use it between a clonal rootstock and another type grafted to it? Has anyone tried it?Let me know. I might try it myself.

Thanks. I will check with them. (Not on their list yet). I will give them a call later.

I have heard good things about the Gold Nugget mandarin. It is supposed to have a great flavor and a late season with a long hang time. From what I've read it will extend your citrus season.
Have fun.

Thanks, I will keep looking for someone within the state of Texas to get scions or a tree from. I am not trying to break any laws or get anyone in trouble, I just want this particular tree because of the reported flavor and long hang time. I am sorry my post seems to have caused some controversy among the members here.

My best chance for obtaining one is from an individual, (preferable within the state). They would have gotten it before the ban or moved here with it. From what I've been told any state other than California and Florida can ship me one. I don't think scions are included in the restrictions, but I could be wrong. I would be willing to graft scions, if I can get them. I have a old dancy that has never really produced, (good tasting fruit). I have several other citrus trees I bought home from a trip to Disney in Florida about twenty years ago, before all the bans started, that have done well and produce good fruit every year.

Hi, I would like to get one of these, however no one seems to carry them in my area. If anyone knows where I can get one, or has one they could sell me I would appreciate it. I will also take scions if anyone has any, I will graft it to a local variety.
Thank you.
