he is okay.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruiting Salak in Florida with pictures

I plan to push the envelope in Bokeelia's microclimate. My plan is to put the ultra-sensitive breadfruit, mangosteen, etc. in a created microclimate at the center of the 3 acre property around a pond and sheltered by dense but less sensitive species. Likely during the first years this will take some cold-protection. Wish me luck!

Hope it goes well. I love my trips to Pine Island and enjoy riding around to see what I can spot.  Good luck!

Very nice. I can't tell for sure if that's just one plant. If so, it must
be a Salak Bali.

Wow! How cool.

I have found that EMS packages have fared better than regular parcel post. EMS also allows one to track the package,
whereas pp is anyone's guess as to the shipping status.

Of course, all bets are off if your package lands in Miami  :-\

PS    Nice to read civil discussions when an issue arises

I hereby refute and retract all of my earlier statements.   8)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Gac Seeds Anyone?
« on: September 24, 2016, 06:19:43 PM »
I purchased some Gac seeds from Thailand via Amazon and have more than I will
ever plant or need.

If anyone in continental U.S. would like some, they are free and I only ask for payment
for mailing. I will send a minimum of 5 seeds and possibly more, depending on interest.

Please PM me if you are interested.

137
Hope it all works out for you. A real bummer when you wait in anticipation for weeks,
only to find that the seeds never arrive.

Mailman showed up with empty envelope. No seeds. Please advise.

Edit:
I refused delivery and had Mailman return to sender. You can track it with the same tracking number you provided me.

Too bad. I had my heart set on growing Marang for my family.
This is the second time I ordered Marang, and didn't receive it.
First was from a highly respected seller (who has 100% feedback from Dave's Garden, and is loved here)
Marang denied :(

Were the seeds confiscated? I purchased Marang seeds from Lory last year and it was a smooth transaction.

I also bought seeds. As they germinated and the leaves began to develop, I also saw a
difference in colors. The green leaves became darker and what I presume are reds had
yellowish leaves with  pinkish edges. After 2 weeks growth, the difference was more noticeable.

Here's what they looked like one month ago (not the greatest of photos, but you see the difference).

Hope this helps.

look like flowers on one of the G. sopsopia/paniculata after 3yr...

notice the 3 spherical objects at the tips of the branches (I was expecting flowers to emerge from the caulis like G. intermedia)

Very nice Adam; hope it does turn out to be a flower.

Here's my current collection:

I looked back through my purchases and low and behold, was a seed purchase of Garcinia xanthochymus
from Roy, in India, back in March. Another mystery solved and I will tag them immediately.

Thanks so much everyone for your keen eyes and responses!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Wanted: Bali Salak seedling or seeds
« on: September 17, 2016, 09:22:30 AM »
From The Archives of the Rare Fruit Council of Australia::

William F. Whitman of Florida reported many years ago that the 'Bali' salak was monoecious whilst other salaks were dioecious. Since then we have had many conflicting reports, including the story that Mr. Whitman did not see the male trees growing around the perimeter of the salak orchards he visited in Indonesia. However, individual salaks have now fruited in North Queensland, thus proving Mr. Whitman correct in his observations.

Sildanani mentioned Xanthonimus, and that remember me looks like thee Garcinia Dulcis I gor from Joshua in Australia didn't you order some of those............?

No, I didn't order those Raul.

They do look very similar to Achachiaru; however, the seeds I purchased from Berto last year have all germinated and are accounted for. I did purchase some
MayongChid from Genesis about 5 months ago and the leaves do look very similar (even the curling of the tip). Could that be it?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I did purchase Luc's Garcinia seeds last year; however,  all of them germinated last
year and are accounted for.

I have never purchased any Mamey seeds. I did buy one fruit from the Asian market
and it was not very good, so I don't think I would have planted any of its seeds. Would
one Mamey have 10 seeds that size? That's the number of combined seeds and seedlings
I have in the 3 pots.

Thanks again.

I uncovered one of the seeds and placed it next to the plant. I assume the silver sheen on the
seed is from the packing medium.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Key Lime Not Producing in SW FLA 9B??
« on: September 15, 2016, 11:32:14 AM »
I live in the St. Pete area and my key lime tree is probably 15 - 18 years old. It produces
year round and some years has so many I can't give them away. My freezer is full of frozen
juice. I don't know if it was grafted and believe I purchased it from Carroll''s Nursery on
38th Avenue.

Not much this time of year. The only place I can think of besides the flea market
is an Asian grocery store in a shopping plaza at the corner of 49th Street and Park Blvd.
I picked up a box of Rambutan last weekend.

Hey All

I have grown pineapples in the past from standard grocery store tops (Smooth Cayenne variety I assume?).  They are incredibly fragrant & much better/sweeter than their original store bought parent whenever I can beat the possums & raccoons to them. I have been hearing about White Kona Sugarloaf (edible core) as being the best tasting for years.  Short of ordering one from Hawaii for $25 + $25 shipping or growing one I have no idea if they are as good as some people claim.

My question is how much better is homegrown Kona sugarloaf than the standard HOMEGROWN grocery store variety (which is pretty darn good)?  Is Kona Sugarloaf the absolute best or there even other better tasting varieties?

Thanks!!!

I can attest to the White Jade being superb.
