Top 12 Mango Producing Countries
« on: May 01, 2012, 05:13:02 AM »

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates worldwide production of mangoes at more than 23 million tons in 2001. With 12 million tons produced    annually (2002-3 data), India accounts for almost half of the world production, followed by China (3 million tons), Pakistan (2.25 million tons), Mexico (1.5 million tons) and Thailand (1.35 million tons). The aggregate production of 10 countries is responsible for roughly 80% of the entire world mango production.

Fruitlover I am surprised that India has 20x more people than Thailand and has an area under mangoes 6 to 7 times greater.Does that mean mangoes are 3 x less popular in India than in their spiritual home?

Volume my be a truer indicator and India produces 9x more for 20 x more people so it still is less than half as popular per capita than Thailand.

You make the erroneous assumption that both countries are producing only for local consumption. Thailand exports a very large percentage of total mangos it produces, especially as after market products: juices, purees, etc., whereas India comsumes most of the mangos it produces. It's only very recently that India has started to export mangos and then only a tiny percentage of it's total production.

Fruitlovers you got me there and the per capita favour to thailand may be more like 1.5 x that of India. It was not this that I was referring to because it modern. As 17 mangiferas occur in thailand it is the centre of diversity.Mangifera paleoindica traces have been identified in northern thailand and it is accepted that the root of M.indica is there.Intraspecific genetic diversity is probably the clincher but the origin of the domestic mango could have been in an arc that stretch right across the two.

You also wrongly assume that people in both of these countries have the same buying power. But that is not true, Indian wages are much lower than Thai, and there is a lot more unemployment in India, so many people in India may not even be able to afford to eat luxury fruits unless they are lucky enough to have wild trees in their area.
As to exact orgin of M. indica, i don't think it's known exactly, but almost every expert says India-Burma. As for Mangifera species diversity beside indica i think Borneo has the highest diversity. One of the researchers here went on a mangifera species collecting expedition and brought back a couple dozen mangifera species. He went to Borneo, not Thailand. Then again very little wild lands remain in tact in Thailand.

Fruitlovers that was a great return of serve. Most scientific journals in recent times advise that the Malay peninsula is the centre of diversity for the genus.Indica is where it gets more difficult but the American Journal of Botany 2009 and in particular Prakart Sawangchote can shed some light on the matter.I'll let it go there.A compelling case may be mounted either way I think but I'll stick with gut feeling that the best mangoes come from thailand..

I'll bet those stats are off.....That Pakistan beats out China in mango production. The Mugal Kings were famous for their large mango orchards with many varieties grown.  For grafting and breeding mangoes.
There it was all the time, staring you in the face. Buried within the message itself, is the key..

Those stats are definitely off as they are 11 years old, for year 2001, but couldn't find any current stats. I doubt thought that Pakistan produces more mango than China. Pakistan is a very small and now war torn country.

Just thinking here, but wouldn't this list be on commercial growing production? and not necessarily total mangoes produced, it would seem logical that if there are lots of trees available everywhere, locals would not need to buy from commercial growers.  Here in the D.R. there are commercial growers, but then you have the street vendors, road side vendors, and small farmers markets where fruits come from small farms, and other non commercial sources. not to mention there is a tree on almost every yard in the country side.  I have to believe the same happens in India, and Thailand also.

Tropicdude you are right and mango trees are on every street and in every yard.I kinda forgot the point of the discussion.Even if the species was domesticated in northern thailand, the malay peninsula is the centre of diversity and thailand has more consumption per capita......so what.It all proabaly happened at the same time in India and they are just as important there. They are the national fruit of the phillipines also and important all over the tropics. There can't be too many fruits as important or enjoyed in the world.

That's also a good point. The numbers only reflect quantities sold. Maybe as much or more is eaten right off trees for free and never recorded. So this calculation of Mike's about consumption of mangos per capita in Thailand vs. India is riddled with swiss cheese logic holes. But nice try anyway.  ;)

That is kinda true fruitlover but the initial statement and logic had a few holes and the figures were unsupportive so it was open for bending towards my opinion. It would be interesting to look at a few scientific papers and resolve and the origin and diversity question.

Open for bending towards my opinion? HAHAHA Ever considered a career in politics?  ;)
Unfortunately recent mango sales stats are hard to come by unless you pay for them.
As for origin of indica, i think it's probably India-Burma, and later migrated towards Thailand and Malaysia.
Other species of mangifera not so sure about. But currently i know that Borneo has the greatest diversity, not Malaysian mainland. But ofcourse currently is different than originally.

C'mon fruitlover  we pay the pollies truffles and we get pigs.Borneo is just a hangover from the peninsula and part of 'sunda'.Have a look at that definitive Am. Journ. of Bot. 2009 paper and follow the references and all will be revealed.
