Nice 15g loquats in So. Fla
« on: February 16, 2015, 10:13:18 PM »
Just when you think you have everything you need this guy in West Palm turns up with 15 gal loquats for $25! I went there and WOW he has ~ 100 mango trees which he sells the fruit from commercially. He also has many mango trees (and more stuff) for sale. I saw a most unusual little ~10' papaya tree with HUGE papaya (twice as big as any I've seen before) on it too!

I picked up a nice loquat that has a good fruit set (large sweet fruits) on it that I plan on grafting other varieties onto. Nice guy, GR8 prices. Look Charlie up on Craig's list search Loquats (CL is VERY specific, loquat in a search won't find him)  If you don't find him, PM me.
Regards,

   Gary

His orchard is "STAGGERING" and I'm putting it mildly, I can't wait for mango season so I can go get some.

Mine are just ripening, but the ones I sampled at Charlie's were large, sweet and juicy. I plan on grafting this one into a cocktail tree

I bought one of his 15 gallon loquats over the weekend. He grafts his own and calls them supreme loquat. I see one large fruit of about 1.5" long on my tree...not planted yet. He has a grove of mango trees and likes Edward the best same as his wife. But from his long experience with Edward and others he says Ed is not a good producer.
He is a really good pruner. One mango tree had a trunk of about 14" diameter but was kept 20ft x 20ft and nicely branched out. Looking like a 20ft tip pruned tree with thick 7" branches.

his loquats for sale

He also has lots and lots (about 30) of 15-25 gallon mango trees that he is not being pro-active about selling. I did not ask what varieties but some might be Edward. You can call/email Charlie for prices because I did not ask
You can email him via his Craigs list advert. He answered my emails to him.
You can ask what mangoes in 15-25 gallon he is selling. Most were 25 gallon iirc

Charlie is quite a fellow huh? :-) He LOVES them trees. He also has AVO seedlings and grafted ones and probably more than the 30 mango you saw. Did you walk the property? He has adult lychee, longan, carambola, and AVO too growing producing fruit for sale. He even has his own nest of wild bees somewhere!

Did Charlie tell you his fertilization program for his old mango trees? Some looked 20-30 years old??

Thanks for the hot tip on Charlie and his loquats for sale. He has quite an operation.
We only walked halfway into his mango orchard but it was impressive. He must have 40 mango trees or more. Closer to his house he had a thick ol tree that he had cut back very severely to the trunk plus some major branches. He had lots of Southern Blush mango scions grafted onto the new growth.....So he was converting some old tree to Southern Blush

Wife and I visited Charlie's place this morning. Extremely nice fellow. Said that he has about 100 mango trees. Virtually all of them mature old (30-40 years). Huge old trunks - and I imagine huge old root systems to match. He 'pugs' back a small number of them every year in rotation. First year after pugging it's all new vegetative growth and no fruit. Second year they bear lightly. Third year they are gangbusters. All his trees looked vibrantly healthy and absolutely LOADED with pea sized fruits!

We got to taste his 'Supreme' loquats from his mother tree. Neither of us has any experience with loquat cultivars so we can't make a comparison. However, we both liked the fruit quite a bit - so we bought one home with us.

So just for clarafication purposes:

The "Supreme" loquat is a seedling selection of his that he now grafts?

And he has a lot of mangoes in 15/25 gallon but is unsure of the varieties (and are they possibly grafted seedlings too)?

What about his "grove", known varieties?

I have never come across a 'Supreme' cultivar of loquat in anything I have read. Not positive but I think that his 'mother' tree is the original Supreme. All I said was that we tried it and liked it - and bought a tree for $25. The couple of loquats Charlie gave us to taste were the first loquats of our lives, so I'm just reporting our experience as two naive amateurs. Actually this 'Supreme' is our second loquat tree. On Monday we visited Excalibur and bought a nice looking Wolfe (3 gal) for $35. The Wolfe is a FAR prettier tree, BTW. However we won't get to actually taste a Wolfe loquat until our new little tree grows up a bit.

Charlie pointed to a 12 ft seedling loquat that turned out very well. He grafts from this one and calls it Supreme loquat. About the 15/25 gallon mangoes for sale. He is a skilled grafter. I saw his grafting work. So those must be grafted (not seedlings) mangoes of old conventional Florida varieties. You know...Keitt, Edward, Carrie etc. I did not ask him on this so someone should verify by email or over the phone.

Mangoes in his grove that he sells at quite reasonable price during the season. As in $5 for a plastic bucket full and that plastic bucket is larger than 3 gallon ones. He said 10 mangoes fit in the bucket
Varieties mentioned were:
Edward  (his and wife's favorite)
Carrie
Tommy Atkins
Southern Blush
Someone should email him to find out more.

If anyone is looking for the new Zill mangoes, my guess is he does not grow them.
Other fruit trees he has in his grove
Carambola
Lychee
Lots of different avocados.

He says all his avocados get sprayed with a combo of>
copper
neem oil
a miticide

Charlie is a retiree - a gentle and laid back guy. His 'grove' has been his hobby for decades. His trees are older varieties going back 30-40 years ago. He mentioned Carrie, Tommy Atkins, Kent, Haden,... When people come to buy his mangoes and say that they wish that they could have a tree yielding that fruit he then tells them they can and shows them his collection of trees grafted from the ones they like the fruit of.

He has a sweatheart for sure, his property overwhelmed me so I'll have more info next time I go there. he was very interested in a friend's mango that has huge green mangos that are still on the tree on October and my Julie seedling. I told him I'd bring him some fruit and scions of both if possible.

Two of mine came ripe today, these were easily as good as my Christmas, but larger and juicier too.

The tree we ate samples from had fruit in all stages - green, pale yellow and still hard, medium yellow with softness, overripe with blemishes, shriveled and beyond appetizing. Charlie picked a couple of nice ones for us. The fruits were maybe 3 cm long, oval, 1-2 seeds which released from the flesh readily. Texture of fruit gave pleasant mouth feel, some juiciness, not crisp. Taste was quite enjoyable, pleasant combination of sweetness with some tart-sour underneath. I would have enjoyed eating a handful or two.

We haven't planted the 'Supreme' or the Wolfe yet. With the 2 pots standing together the appearance of the Wolfe is clearly the superior of the supreme. (My Latin teacher probably turned over in his grave right then...)

What Charlie said is he bought the original "supreme" (seedling / grafted is unknown) from a nursery that had it labeled so. Now he's grafting from the original he bought those many years ago.

For your clarification purposes... he has two areas of interest, the nursery where he grafts and sells small grafted trees in containers and a commercial property with dozens of fully adult trees which he sells the fruit from commercially. This is not a small backyard property, many / most of his trees have trunks measured in FEET across. So yes in every respect it is a grove, not a "grove" :-)

Gnappi, very interested in this multi grafting cocktail loquat project. Would allow me for more variety from one tree in my limited space. Have found several videos on growing cuttings of loquats, grafting to seedling/rootstock, but nothing I can find on grafting one variety to have multiples. I assume you just do same as graft, but on branch?

He is the most extreme pugger probably. He is cutting 30-40 year old mango trees way way way back to my guess not more than 6-7 ft high. He puggs down to the major branches off the trunk. Lets them run about 5 ft. then puggs. I saw the aftermath of such pugging maybe a year or two afterwards

Charlie is my neighbor and his trees are super nice.  He will talk mangos with you anytime he is back in the grove.  lots of fruit and trees for sale too.  He gave me great advise over the years.   I have a giant Hayden in my yard that is over 35 years old and he planted it.
