Video: How to prune Jaboticaba trees
« on: March 14, 2015, 06:49:45 PM »
we just finished filming today...we had a real fancy camera at our disposal.

I pruned a decent sized Myrciaria trunciflora (8-9ft, 15yrs or older), and Myrciaria aureana (fruiting size, 6-7ft, approx. 7yr old) for the video.

If the editing process goes as planned, it will be ready post by Sunday/Monday.

P.S.

(we also filmed a second video, showing some of the diversity I have here at the nursery.....it will show about 15 species of Myrciaria/Plina, and 6 of those species are fruiting or flowering)

UPDATE:

video is finished,
enjoy!

mod edit: fixed video so it will show in post

Thanks for also demonstrating how to eat the fruit directly off the trunk.  LOL. That was funny.

Very nice! Do you recommend waiting until fruiting size to open up the trunk?

what I want to know is what did you do with all those fruiting white jabo scions.  I hope you didn't compost them.   :-[

NO!  get started ASAP! even small seedlings!

haha!  glad you thought of that!  I have them in a giant plastic bag in my house, will probably start grafting them all over the place tomorrow...I have lots of places to put them!

and still have a few more large aureanas the same size that need to be pruned!

watched this video last night.  quite hilarious to see you go 'animal' and directly graze off of the tree.

I have a small jaboticaba tree...maybe 2.5-3ft tall.  got it when it was under a foot tall and in the group for 2 years.  it's growing this way and that. should I even try to prune it the way you did in the video or should I wait till it gets toa  minimum height?  I'm just glad that it's able to grow!

prune as early as possible...and keep it up for the rest of the trees life.

I prune mine about 4 time a year...one heavy pruning, and then lots of light pruning keeping new shoots on the caulis in check.

I can understand the small buds and even whip-like branches, but noticed you even removed some larger sized branches.  Wouldn't more of these mean more fruit?

yes I remove some smaller fruiting branches, because they impede your access to the tree, and removing them allows for the older portions of the tree to produce even more flowers.

You want concentrate the fruit production on the oldest parts of the tree.  Don't encourage every branch that tries to fruit (or starts to flower), to keep fruiting.  They can still crowd the tree.

Nice video. I wonder though, on my small grafted tree. Mine has many new shoots on it, but the older branches aren't that much in distance from the graft. Should I let the new growth grow to see how long it will get before deciding which branches will be the main?

While I was on youtube, I put on the grafting video. The beginning was funny, you must've been channeling the 80s with that. :)

not sure what u mean, but if you're asking if you should let small branches grow from the largest branches, the short answer is no...Pick the largest branches, and encourage those to grow larger, do not allow anything to grow from them other than flowers.

Thanks for the demonstration video, I also enjoyed seeing you go animal style on the Jabos! I hope you know that your Jabo tree is not happy about you stealing their lizard guano!

that's the ticket!

but I do see a few small spindly branches near the base, and middle of the tree that I'd take out!

Still this prune job u did will make all the difference.

as time goes on you'll be less bashful about removing branches!
