Want Large Mango Tree SW Florida
« on: June 02, 2012, 11:15:43 AM »
We just purchased a home and the sad part is that it is missing a mango tree! I'd like to find a very large mango tree to fill up the yard. I am open to all varieties (mango lover here ;)). Of course, depending on the size I'd need someone to plant it for me.

Located in Port Charlotte, 50 miles north of Naples.

Anyone know where I can get a large speciman?

Or does anyone know of a place to buy large tropical fruit trees around the area?

Thank you!

How large of a tree are you looking for?

25-45 gallon mango trees could probably easily be found in SW FL but if you want something larger such as 100 and 200gs or even mature trees that are in the ground you should probably check out Excalibur in Lake Worth.

Excalibur is definitely the place to go if you are looking for a huge tree. The huge ones are definitely not cheap though. Unless you dont mind paying for a huge tree, you might be better off just getting a 45g tree and pick a variety that is a vigorous grower. Last time I was at Excalibur I saw someone buy a huge Glenn. I think it was 1k if I am remembering right.

I think you should just get a vigorous variety (or 2!) and take good care of it, and in two years it'll be a good size tree.

Even if he goes with a vigorous variety, such as a Valencia Pride, it will still be relatively small even in two years unless he starts with a significant sized tree to begin with.  I guess it all depends on his actual wants/needs.  The other problem with a vigorous grower is that it will eventually get HUGE.  He may not want a mango the size of a VP once it hits the 10-15 year old range.  While it makes a great shade tree and produces a heavy crop, harvesting the top of the tree when it achieves it potential height could be very difficult or costly.

Ex-calibur = Ex-tra Large Tree Nursery. That is the place to go to for the monster sized potted trees. You can even get them to bring the tree, crane, and hole digging machinery,  and pop it in for you.

We have a member here named jabomano who is in Ft Meyers. He knows where to buy large mango trees close to you

But Excalibur is an amazing place with so many trees in large pots up to 6ft diameter. They must have the best selection of them. If you have the $$$ it might pay to buy 2 or more large mango trees and some smaller fruit trees while you are there. The transportation costs will be the same. Or get a friend interested in a large mango tree to share the transport costs.

The guy in a white shirt planting Ray's (jabomano) tree looks like Steve Cucura from Fruitscapes.  Steve is a nice guy to deal with and I just did some business with him yesterday.  I would recommend Steve from Fruitscapes (239) 462-2341 or Lianne from the Treehouse Nursery (239) 283-3688.  Both nurseries are located in Pine Island. Good luck!
