Mauby - Colubrina arborescens
« on: June 17, 2012, 12:44:57 PM »
Anyone growing mauby trees? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauby

The bark makes a pretty good drink if you haven't tried it. I think different countries in the Caribbean make it differently so I can't comment on ones made other than Trinidad and Guyana. It's considered a FL native too I think but I don't know of anyone using it to make the drink here except for people from the Caribbean.

The drink is supposed to also help with hypertension: http://caribbean.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0043-31442005000100002&lng=en

Another article on its benefits: http://www.bbc.co.uk/caribbean/news/story/2009/12/091224_mauby.shtml

If anyone is willing to plant one in the ground and is in S FL, I have an extra tree in a 3g that I am willing to give away for free.

If you don't live in S FL, I have some seeds that I can share. I'd prefer to give the seeds to people who will plant the tree in the ground.

How To Make Mauby Drink.

The fruit isn't edible but the bark is used as a spice kinda I guess. The fruit is just a hard shell for the seeds. Similar to cinnamon but not...

It's very common in Puerto Rico where it's called "Mavi" and the juice is widely sold, even in some grocery stores. It's one of the traditional island drinks

Is the drink or the bark available outside of the Caribbean? I'd like to taste it. Seems from that video Murahilin posted that it's super easy to make the drink.

I have seen it for sale here in Florida but only by roadside vendors in the Miami area. I'll keep my eye out for a source for you. The tree is native to South Florida and is called Soldierwood.

Next time I see the bark for sale I'll send you some. You'll be able to make your own homemade mauby.

There is a wonderful article for the Maury tree, which is native south FL, at eattheweeds.com.  The preferred tree for Maury is Colubrina elliptical also known as snakebark.  It was also called hog plum, but I don't believe it is the same tree.  I'm going to try to find a tree to plant.  It is a well known and loved beverage in the Caribbean and S. America.

So I've had a couple different  Mauby drinks. The taste varies in flavor from sweet and root beery to astringent and gross. It all depends of the preparation and purpose.

My favorite Mauby I had was in St. Kitts, it was made in the stores that sold it in big jugs. And I would buy these big bottles and drink it walking down the street (cause it was delicious and I couldnt get enough), also I should add that the last time I went to St. Kitts I was 14 yrs old. And all the natives would just crack up at me chugging this stuff, so after a week of this I decided to ask what was so funny and this big dude was like "Boy you drink that stuff when you got a big date and want to make sure your cock is up for the task."

It is apparently their aphrodisiac, didn't stop me from drinking it though. I've honestly thought bout going back just to get some Mauby

Is this in addition to the tree you promised my neighbors?

The tree for your neighbors is accounted for. I already gave away the extra one from the original post. I should probably edit the post as such.

I am not sure if C. elliptica is the preferred tree everywhere to make mauby. I think it may depend on the island and which species is native to the region. I think C. arborescens is native to the Lesser Antilles while C. elliptica is native to the Greater.

I claimed one of Sheehans mauby trees about 6 months ago and that thing has grown so much that i needed to do a major cut back last month.  Also, I will try to get some bottled mauby for those who want to try it.  I find it to have a licorice taste that is borderline palatable.  My father loves it so I am growing it but I think I would quicker drink sewer water if given the choice.  OK, maybe that isn't an apt comparison but lets just say it isn't my favorite.

Lol. I never liked the pre-bottled stuff either.  I only started liking it once I had it home made. Pretty good then.
