Pouteria and Moraceae ID
« on: June 12, 2016, 09:59:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

I found two fruits in the forest and i struggle to identification. I'll be glad if someone can ID them.

The first one in with no doubt a Sapotaceae, maybe a cauliflorous Pouteria species.
Few fruits on the tree, hanging at 6 meters high. Fruit taste like banana, scant pulp clinging to the seeds. Pleasant to keep sucking in the mouth for a while...
Here the pics :

The second one probably come from the Moraceae family, i wasn't able to spot the tree. Fruits were on the ground, most of them already eaten by wild animals. It look like a giant mulberry fruit. Each cluster contains a black seed with sweet pulp around. What a weird fruit ! :o

Thanx for help !

The third pictured fruit is probably in the Annonaceae, but it is unlike any that I have seen or read of.

That last pic reminds me of an elongated version of one of Soren's GYM -- a Myrianthus sp. -- but wrong continent for that.  You've found some interesting fruit, Columbo!

Here in southeastern Brazil, we have trees with fruit similar to this.
But they are Sapotaceae, but the order of Pradosia. (Buranhem, arvore de Pau doce), is similar to Abiu, with sweetened milk flavor.

Another possibility for the third fruit is the Araceae family, "elephant-ear" family, such as Monstera.

Did you see the plant/tree?

I would say the same!
The fruits look like small Monstera deliciosa fruits.
Monsteras often climb over trees, and if the fruit falls, we might think it comes from a tree...

Yes, it is similar to Pradosia, but no one (said to be present in the Guianas) matches with this one.

I don't think it's a Monstera, too much fruits on a 6-10 meters wide area. I'll take a pic of the seeds tomorrow, maybe it will be helpful.

I hope it will help, but doesn't seems to be a Annonaceae...

Very cool stuff, any pictures of the tree or growth of the strange yellow fruit?
