Impromptu Mango Tasting at Leo's
« on: August 12, 2016, 05:34:42 PM »
We just had an impromptu Mango tasting at Leo Manuels place and I'm sugared out. This was a last minute thing and was put together in about two days. There was a good variety of fruit such as Mangos, Lychees, Jaboticabas, Figs, Citrus, white Sapote and some special grape that tasted like Jaboticabas but I forget the name, I think it might have been muscadine or something like that.

As usual, I enjoyed the company as much as the fruit. When you bring like minded fruit lovers together, all is well in the world. Here are a couple shots of the fruit spread, not everything is shown as the table was not big enough.

These would be considered early/mid season mangos and some of them were not properly ripened or simply washed out in taste because they are the first fruits. The Mid/late season mangos tend to have letter flavor and much more sweetness.

That being said, the Aloha mango is absolutely amazing! I don't know the background of this mango but I believe it was the favorite for most everyone at the tasting today. This mango was sweet with a strong tropical mango flavor and just a hint of acidity to keep it interesting. Upon first taste, it reminded me of a perfectly ripened DOT. It tastes like a combination of DOT, Sweet Tart and Fruit Punch without being cloyingly sweet but definitely sweet enough.

First I'll post the Brix readings, notice that the Brix readings are extremely low as most of the varieties are not in their prime yet and some of the fruit was harvested on younger trees or trees that may have been stunted from the rootstock.

#14 is Po Pyu Kalai
#15 is Sweet Tart
#16 is Lemon Zest
These are the ones with abbreviations. The MT mangos are named after someone. The Sunrise, Early Gold and Cypress were all great mangos. Sunrise stood out to me because it had a bit of resin flavor to it and it also had a bit of bitterness towards the skin. The Aloha was just a perfect mango, I've got one more on the counter and I'll try to give a more in depth flavor profile when I eat it. It was difficult taking Brix readings, writing things down and keeping my daughters entertained.

Aloha is descendant from White Piri I believe, sounds like a winner though!

Thanks Simon for the report. Looks like the next best thing to the Puerto Rico trip. Actually, some may prefer this to PR.

Here's some of the parting gifts.
Jaboticaba, I believe it's the Sabara variety

Hello ScottR, Jim is doing well but still a bit frail, thanks for asking. Everyone is chipping in, helping to keep him active by taking him to events and visiting him at his home. The rare fruit growing community is amazing and really takes care of our members in need of help.

Here are some pictures of three varieties of Lychee that are ripe now. Brewster has colored up but not at full size and flavor.

I know there are several of us with Leo's best varieties and Frank seems to have all the best varieties from all of SoCal. I'm not sure if Leo sells scions or not but he probably shares them in the CRFG meetings.

I will make California mango scions available for the following:

Aloha
Cypress
Diplomatico
MT2
MT3

I'll put it in the Sell/Trade board
