Lemon Guava (How do I prune this?) - Was staked too long
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:32:36 PM »
First Post! Like the forum very much....

I left a stake too long on this Lemon Guava and now it won't stand on its own. The top of the trunk is thicker than the middle. What should I do to correct this? And what time of year should I do it? (I'm in 9b, San Jose, CA).

Thanks for any input..

Congrats on your first post.....you've now officially lost your posting virginity.  re: your guava......have you considered growing in an espalier form?

I'd probably cut the top foot or two off to get a little weight off of it and then let the trunk strength on it's own.

Espalier...hadn't thought of that. I guess I could anchor some wiring into the brick....

Just read the "pugging" thread. Maybe I should try that. Although it might mean a lot less fruit though...

Wish I had taken the stake out earlier...oh well live and learn!
