Mangosteen grows true to type from seed, as these seeds are asexual embryos of the mother tree. Most commercially sold mangosteens come from the same variety. We found this variety in Sabah and Sarawak, Borneo the fruit was simply referred to as manggis asam (sour) by the vendors. Reading about the variety called “mesta” shows a lot of similarities, except that this one has more viable seeds than normal. 1-3 viable seeds are in a fruit.
So this is how it differs from the standard mangosteen in our experience: more oblong fruit, more round on the bottom; when cracked open the fleshy skin of the fruit is more reddish purple; the taste is more tangy, similarly sweet and more tart and also has more taste packed in, eat a normal mangosteen after this and it will have a boring taste; contains more seeds (1-3); the seeds are smoother; the fruit is less prone to have the yellow sap tainting the fruits (we haven’t found any fruits like that); the fruit has longer shelf life: becomes sweeter and less tart over time.
Overall, we like the normal mangosteen more because we can eat monomeals from it (3-4 kg per person), this variety is too tart for that, it’s more like something we would snack on or eat to refresh our senses between two durians.
