Giant Lemon Guava's vs Normal Lemon Guava's
« on: October 21, 2012, 05:44:23 PM »
Howdy Fellow Members,

Today, I went for a walk to Graça, as usual and to check on them wild sweet Chestnuts...which, i harvest around autumn ~ winter...they ain't ready yet :( Then suddenly, I look to my left and there was a tree about 7m away from me...and i said to my self...Is that a Giant Lemon guava :o :o :o :o Indeed, it is :o never seen one so huge before 8) I have walked here so many times and yet i have never noticed this giant :-[ The bad part is that the tree ain't looking good :'( I really hope the tree survives for me to try to propagate this variety! The flavour is the same...just bigger 8)

Thanks :)

Steven to me the larger one looks like the normal yellow cherry guava (maybe a feather bigger than normal) and I have never seen fruit as tiny as the smaller one on the yellow cherry guava (var. littorale).

Steven,

The strawberry guavas I was growing, were about the same size or a tad smaller then the ones pictured.

Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Hi Mike,
I was quite amazed to find this today :) This small fruited one, i grow here in the highlands...and you are right, they are tiny ;) Though, very tasty :)

Hi Stephen,

Thansk for sharing a pic from your :) That's a good sized, lemon guava you got there, Null 8) The one i got in the orchard is a tad smaller than your...though, still tasty :)

One obvious advantage on growing them in the highlands...less fruit fly infestation :) This large one is growing at a higher altitude than me 8)

Maybe the small ones are Psidium guineense.

I once had a tree and the fruit is tasty but tiny.

Olá Sérgio,
The tree that bears these small fruits has araça leaves, whilst guineense has a guava type leaf.

Hi! Pure magic

today I tasted a fruit from a plant that I grew from your seeds from Graça, and it was very good. To me it is different to our lemon guavas, it tasted more similar to the red strawberry guava. Great variety! I will sow more seeds! thanks Steven!

The larger size fruit is the size of my lemon guavas...they do seem to vary from plant to plant, but most of the ones on my main producing plant are 1.5 - 2.5 inches in diameter.  They seem to generally be larger and less sour than strawberry guavas.

I haven't figured out whether that's a trait that can be passed on by seed, or whether it has more to do with growing conditions.  I have started a bunch of seedlings, but none have fruited yet.

My lemon guava are also in general larger than my  strawberry guava. I think they respond well to regular watering and minor thinning to get larger fruit also.

A friend of mine that grows strawberry guava and other guavas tasted this variety and said that it was the best he ever had. I am starting to think this is true.
