Can caper berries be eaten fresh?
« on: June 20, 2019, 12:30:44 PM »
My caper bush has set fruit for the first time, and I am wondering if I can eat the berries fresh, or if they must be pickled or ruined first like olives.

Thanks!

Carolyn

The caper flower becomes a berry if not picked.

I've eaten the buds. Very astringent. I can't imaging chewing up a whole seed pod.

That said, my wife has started using them in cooking w/o pickling. Interesting. More bitter but i kinda like it.

I don't know about the mediterranean caper, but the capparis species native to Australia all produce raw edible fruit.

I have never eaten one raw, but the berries are pretty good when pickled.

Thanks all, and yes, I was talking about the fruits (caper berries), not the flower buds (capers). I have been letting the flowers open because they are so gorgeous.
