Photo of a 3yr old Durian tree with a fruit on it

Owner says tree set 5 fruits and aborted the first 4.  Looks like this one will hang on.  I have never seen such a small durian tree with fruit on it.  The woman in the photo is only 5' 1" tall.  I guess you could fruit a durian in your house in Alaska.

Hey Red I have heard of 4 years for a grafted one but not 3 years after planting out. 5 years for a seedling is about the quickest I know and that is for one planted out already 3ft high.Do you know the variety and if it is grafted? It seems very thick for 3 years although I had one grafted tree fruit at 4.5 years old and 5m tall.

I could not see the graft scar, but she said it was grafted.  I shouldn't have said a 3 yr old tree.  Really, it would be 3 yrs since she planted it  I don't know how big it was when she put it in the ground.  Tree has been topped as you may be able to see.  I also don't know the variety, sorry.

He could be my father Gary, not that ain't me. My duriantree is much smaller but pics like these give me hope that i can keep it small and fruiting. I like Googling for tambulanpot now, it means tree in big pot and i have many of them. Can't wait to buy some more pots.

In Thailand they always say that durian trees can fruit in 3-5 years if grafted, but i've never seen such a short tree with fruit. I guess its because it was topped?

I think this tree was grafted and also had pruned the top. This size would be perfect for a greenhouse.

My own Mongthon is also grafted, multigrafting it failed. I allready pruned the top but it doesn't grow fast yet.
http://dwilomboklo.blogspot.nl/2011/07/budidaya-durian-unggul.html

They use a lot of 15-15-15 fertilizer. For a tree that's 2-3 years old like mine it is 500-1000 gram a year but  year 4 allready 2.5 kg. Then year 5 4-5 kg. And this is Lombok not Thailand.

I have an addiction to Durian but from what I understand it does not fruit here in South Florida. Anybody has a different perspective? I am just looking for some encouragement....

Well be the first! You might get into the papers with that.

I would buy a grafted duriantree, make a big pot of good soil on coasters. Buy an LED growlight and keep it indoors in the winter. Tree's this tall can be growin in a greenhouse as well.

I've seen much smaller tree here loaded with fruit. It was a D123 which tens to bear very early. Grafting also tends to dwarf trees. And yes was pruned to keep it very short.

cfc there was spirited discussion in past threads on Florida's potential to grow and fruit durian.I was firmly in the aybe camp.No one ever thought to try the more cold tolerant varieties.
Fruiting at 7 for seedlings and 4 for grafted durians is really rare and double these times is more usual.

I've sent a few packs of durian seeds to Florida this year so obviously a few people are in the "maybe" camp too!

I think lots of folks have tried to grow durian, and also mangosteen in Florida. Remember the mangosteen man (Dick Kraujalis sp.?)? How many seeds did he distribute? I know i've sent lots to Florida. Even Fairchild botanical garden has not succeeded yet in fruiting durian. But also they didn't try with any of the cold hardier varieties Mike has recommended. It's a lack of knowledge and also of difficulty in getting the right cultivars. Remember how long it took for Mike to get the macranthas? I think in Florida you can consider yourself very lucky to get any durian seed at all. To get a macrantha you would have to hit the lottery.  ;)

Florida needs to nave a crack at it with lin and long laplaes and red prawn as well.If macrantha and the laplaes yield to the Florida climate then it can't be done.Maybe a highland specimen of a Borneo species is also in the running to fly the Durio flag as well.

Good luck getting a linlaplae seed, I tried this year and no luck. Those little buggers don't have any seeds!

Mike T, what do you think about D. Kinabaluensis? It's high elevation, probably relatively cold tolerant?

I'll be taking a trip to the post office soon, if anybody wants Red Prawn durian seeds they should contact me now at my email address, durianyear@gmail.com

Heya Lindsy, tes D.kinabaluensis would be interesting to try but I was thinking about the 3 or 4 Durios with good fruit that range to higher alts.Red Prawn is the Penang anomaly that performed very well on a farm where low winter minimums had no adverse impacts copared to many other clones and still were flushing new foliage.

Floridians have a lot more difficulty getting that kind of material to experiment with than you do Mike.
Look for example, at the difficulty they had at getting wani. Remember Fruit Hunters movie? In that movie Richard Campbell states they've been trying to graft that unsuccesfully for over 20 years! Then recently got a whole lot more scion wood, tried again, and failed again. Only were able to get wani growing now from cuttings! And this is for Fairchild Gardens, which has paid employees and funding to go fruit exploring and collecting. Imagine the difficulty private collectors would have getting hard to source materials? Not saying it's not possible, just a lot more difficult than you paint it. Australia already has lots more of these rare species growing, and also is a lot closer to native areas where they grow.
