Black Beauty Surinam Cherry Cultivar
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:40:54 PM »
supposedly the best of the best of the black fruited types, has anyone tried it??

I've heard it has no trace of resin, if the fruit is fall in your hand ripe.

I've heard great reviews from some picky Surinam cherry eaters...so I'm excited.

I suppose the more willing you are to search for tasty Surinam cherries, the less disgusting the inferior ones will taste in the process.

Luc,

thanks very much for the info.

I'm happy you are the one reporting back, because I trust your judgment 100%.  Other people are happy to eat any fruit at all, and show no discrimination.

here is a pic of my grafted tree.

It grew quite well, but didn't flower last year.

Now that it's been about 6 months since grafting, it's decided to flower...pretty early.
Looks like it is suckering below graft union!

It hasn't done this much at all which is surprising!

I had to edit my post, because I though it was growing above the graft union.  :-[

my black beauty Surinam cherry had some problems with the foliage.  It was deformed, probably because of some sort of thrips? or sucking insects.

the appearance was pockmarked, and generally deformed...but over time, the tree just grew out of it.

Now its healthy as can be.  I'm so thankful, because I thought it might have a virus.

I'm also surprised by how little this tree has suckered.  I've heard they sucker like crazy, and I've seen some large grafted trees that lived up to this reputation, but this one has been virtually sucker free.

Hi Luc and Adam: I have some questions

What's the size of the fruit?

So, there are red surinam cherrys without resinous taste?

Is the resinous taste in the flesh or in the skin?

I have the "Black Star"  variety, Jim Neitzel was over the other day and tasted it. It is larger and Jim believes it is one of the surinames he picked from his collection a few years ago.

huertas

the fruits on my black beauty have a rough appearance...almost warty...but they taste very nice!

I agree with Luc, so far the fruits are medium sized, not exactly small, but not the largest I've seen.

I'm sure there's pitangas of all colors, red, orange, and black, without any resin taste...I've heard very good things about the better selections of orange types, and red types.

when present, the resin taste is within the whole fruit..pulp, skin, juice.

Here is a photo of the black beauty...its growing somewhat laterally...I tried to show a picture of the fruits rugged skin, and the graft union.  I'm really happy that this tree has been free of suckers, all of the other grafted pitangas I've seen have horrible suckers.

Here are the photos of the Black Beauty....It was excellent...but I can definitely taste some resinous components in the flavor...but the flavor of the resin is different...almost reminds me of a carrot...not the usual pine sap, gasoline flavor of most common pitangas.

I'm curious to compare this cultivar to Zill Black.  I remember these being very similar, but I wonder which I'd prefer when tasted side by side? and which of the two cultivars produces more fruit? bigger fruit? etc..

Here is the "Black Star" pitanga, no resin taste at all. Kind of a shy bearer, but is always flowering. Pictured also a cherimoya and one of Eunice's seedling mangos.

Adam have you noticed the Piatnaga to be extremely variable when planted from seed? Walter Zill has a large tree in his front yard that was pretty sweet when I tried it. I don't recall if it was resinous but there were only a couple fruits rotting on the ground when I went back. He said it was the sweetest he's ever tried. I grabbed some seeds when I was there during mango season and now have a seedling going. If seeds are to variable I will try to graft it...

I heard they're pretty much true to seed!

But if you want scions from the Zill Black, I might be able to get some down the road...I have some small grafted trees I'm keeping for myself.

I've heard there are a few Zill blacks floating around, one is better than the other (so one is the real original one)...I'm supposed to have the original one...I tasted fruits from the mother tree, and it was very nice...one of the best I've tasted (in my limited experience)

And the germination power is great, see, this is the only black pitanga I had (eat) in my life, the flavour was super sweet without resinous taste, I sow this only one seed at november 21 2013 and 35 days later it sprouted, now it's like this:

where did black star come from?
The "black star" originally came from Jim Neitzel, he tasted one of mine and recognized it. The plant I have I believe came from TopTropicals.

Yeah, You think this tree would cocktail graft good. Have a Zill 'Black' on one side Zill 'Red' on the other...there was no name he gave it, but it had a nice dark red color..

The Mango is actually from Eunice Messner's Ataulfo seedling. One of the best along with "Peggy"
