"Whisky Pollen" durio is unlike other Durio graveolens
« on: January 19, 2013, 09:02:59 PM »

This almost seems to be a different species it is so different from red-fleshed Durio graveolens (which I will refer to as "red durian"). My wife and I both like red durian (D. graveolens) very much.  My wife loves whiskey pollen (D. graveolens) even more, however, it is the only durio that I know of that I don't really like.  Here are the differences:

This has yellow-orange flesh.  Red durian is red-fleshed.
This has a very strong aroma of whiskey (not the alcohol aroma, but whiskey) and bee pollen.  Red durian has very little aroma.
This has a very high flesh to seed ratio of about 3:2 on an unaborted seed.  See photo above.  To the right of the seed is the flesh that has come off of that seed.   Red durian usually has much thinner flesh on an unaborted seed.
This has a stong flavour, just like the aroma with some bitterness from the pollen-flavoured element.  Red durian has a very subtle flavour with no bitter element.

Similarities:
Both are more expensive than any other type of Durio here in Tenom.
Both have lower sweetness than a durian.
Both have higher fat than a durian.
Both have less water than a durian.
Both crack open while still on the tree.
Externally they look the same.
Both are the same size.

Looks like a red durian, the kind I like most.

Do you know if "whiskey durian" opens on the ground or on the tree?

There is some disagreement among botanists on the classification of d. graveolens. Some believe that it may currently refer to two species.

The cream coloured flesh variety of whiskey pollen that I bought did not open on the tree or even in my house.  A little pressure popped it open, though.

Lol. Your post resurrected it Adam. I didn't catch it the first time and I think it deserved a sticky because of the quality of the post and all the durian interest on the forum lately.

There aren't too many durian fanatics on this mangophile forum yet. But i can tell you that durian fanatics are by far the most fanatical of all fruit junkies. Don't stand in their way, or they will run you over. They really take it to an extreme. I know many travel thousands of miles only to get their durian dose. Some even immigrate to other countries just so they can have a cheap and available fix at all times. It's a serious serious addiction! Worse than drugs!!!
Personally i like to practice "moderation" in all things, so don't consider myself a fanatic....except when it comes to lychees! They're my Achille's weak point.   :'(  I guess we all have our little weaknesses.  ;)

Looks like it, but would need to smell it to be sure.  I have seen D. graveolens"red durian" come in pink and red and have an uncertain memory of an orange one.  For sure the D. graveolens "whiskey pollen" comes in cream, yellow and orange.

Helmut you are a lot further south than me and durion was grown and fruiting 1 1/2 hour driving north at sea level , so it should not be a problem .

Right temps isn't an ultimate factor. Other things to consider: Young durian needs good watering. Established trees needs 1500-2500 mm annual rainfall without prolonged drought periods. Mature trees needs 1-2 months dry weather to induce flowering.  Standing water will kill durian. Plant on slight slope. Basically that is it! Good luck!

I plant on a slope not only for the drainage but so that the fallen fruit can be collected out of the impact zone!  I am not too sure that the durian tree needs an1-2 month dry period to flower.  If so, about how long after the dry period would the flowers appear?  At the moment we have a large seedling durian with fruit developing and there has been no dry period as long as a month.

As far as dry period, it is the case in SE Asia according to my observations and literature. I noticed in Sri Lanka durian seasons move considerably with weather patterns. It can become erratic, something similar to what S. Floridians are experiencing this year with mangoes. I also heard dry periods could be as low as 2 weeks to induce flowering.  Durian tree a mile away can have delayed flowering reaction due to tiny differences in microclimate.
