Sometimes called the beach sugar apple, they can get pretty big but are described as having amongst the finest flavoured fruit of all Annonas. They are very rare in the wild.

Mike,
Thatís correct! The common name in Brasil is Araticum de Praia, or Beach Araticum. It grows next to the ocean in the Restinga area. Is is very salt tolerant, and I  have seen one tree growing with its roots in brackish water. Itís habitat has been destroyed and used for coconut and sugar cane plantations.
They start fruiting at approximately 2 meters tall, and can be kept at that height if necessary. The growth habit is very upright. They respond well to being pruned.
By the way, which Annona is this one from your post? This is not Annona salzmannii, for sure.

It's Erdon Lee lychee. The image is actually part of his forum signature, so he did not mean it to be relevant to this thread.

By the way, is Beach araticum's outer shell tough enough to avoid fruit flies laying eggs?
I would not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers

Better ditch the erdon lee if it is confusing. Word on the street is that the Recife area Salzmanniis are the cream of the crop.

Yes indeed. My tree is from seeds of that variety found in Recife by Antonio Morschbacker.
Recently, I found another one in Sergipe that is also excellent. Salzmannii will survive!

I would say yes. The shell is pretty hard and thick. I have plenty of fruit flies here in my property, and I have not experienced any fruit fly problem. The last two years I did not bag the fruits. This year I bagged them because the crows were eating them when they were small in size.

No special treatment at all. They will germinate in 30 to 90 days.
Seeds were hand selected and most likely they will germinate very fast.
Seedlings grow extremely slooooow the first few years. In those years, the tree grows a deep taproot. Thatís the reason why I would recommend growing them in 18 inches tall pots. I have 2 years old seedling with 4 pairs or leaves. Whoever wants to grow Annona salzmannii has to be very patient. The long term reward is worth the wait, I believe! 😋😎

people do get a bit soppy over rare Annonas. These will taste better than junglesop and you will actually have a shot at getting fruit.

I believe that many people will be able to fruit Annona salzmannii.
I am getting plenty of fruits here in Fort Myers, Florida. The biggest one was close to 1.5 lbs.

My fruiting salzmannii tree was grafted on 04/14/2012 onto an Annona glabra rootstock.
I ate the first fruit on 08/29/2018
So it took 6 years to fruit from grafting.
The tree has been topped twice. The first time, it was three years ago, prior to the arrival of hurricane Irma when  I cut the tree and it stayed at seven feet tall.
This year,  I topped the tree again and currently it stands approximately 16 to 18 feet tall which is more or less 6 meters tall and 4 meters wide.
I noticed that the fruits are getting bigger as the tree matures.
Today, I had the pleasure of hosting Steve Cucura and his wife to taste the fruit. Both of them were really impressed with salzmanniiís flavor. They said that the fruit tastes like a pineapple. Steve Cucura is the owner of Fruitscapes, a nursery and fruit stand located in Bokeelia, Pine Island, Florida.

Thanks for the information.
Would love to buy some scions if they're available (i don't know if this is the best time to graft though)

I am yet to try them but by all accounts they should be in wider circulation so everyone who can accommodate this tree should be jumping to get them.

These seeds are super fresh, I bought them from Berto based on Mike's assessments. Two weeks in a ziploc and on a heat mat, the seeds are already starting to open up. I should see the tip of the roots in about 3 days from now and that's when they go to a seedling pot.

Thanks again, Berto, for sharing this variety.

Two weeks and 1/2 to germinate. No GA3, just tip filing and bottom heat.

Seeds germinate quickly. I tell people they will germinate in 30 to 90 days. I guess a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised! 😉😎

A bit delayed posting here but want to say,
It was a pleasure meeting Berto and being lucky enough to try this fruit. I loved it. To me I immediately tasted pineapple with apple and banana undertones. Sweet and juicy complex flavor with minimal grittiness. I've only had annona squamosa to compare it to, but it is superior in taste. Berto is legit and will only put his name on viable seeds. Look forward to growing! Thanks again

Zachary
