Is Ackee good? Will it grow in Southern California?
« on: November 19, 2020, 01:08:20 AM »
Google says it can take into the 20's. So why dont I ever hear of people growing it here? Does it not fruit? Does it taste bad?

I think most of it is poisonous and you have to prepare it correctly. Also itís not delicious apparently. According to google it tastes like cream cheese

Poppycock, and google obviously hasn't tried them. doesn't have a cultured palate and should sit his topic out, They are a good fruit even if like avocadoes, are not sweet, Just lightly fry them aril after removing the red membrane and large seeds and they taste like scrambled eggs.

I live in an area where Akee is very common and I have never heard of a poisoning first hand.  I believe itís possible but rarely happens.  We recommend planting akee. Itís delicious both raw and cooked.  When cooking we barely cook it or it can get lost in the meal.  Like a slice of butter in your stir fry.

Ackee needs a lot of heat to fruit well. Even here in Hawaii at 650 ft. elevation does not fruit well, while at sea level it does great. So you might get it to grow, but not to fruit in southern California.
