As many of you already know, most Jaboticaba species prefer acidic conditions. However I am not sure how tolerant Cambuca is of alkaline conditions.

Your experience?

I can't find much information on people growing it outside of its native range. It is a pretty interesting nut tree. It is an important food source for the hunter-gatherers of southern Africa. It reportedly has some frost tolerance, more when dormant.

Unfortunately, the plants are dioecious, meaning male & female flowers on separate plants. Moreover, the only source selling them is for about $70 for 15 seeds before shipping.

I'm surprised there isn't more information on people growing Star Gooseberry in Southern California since it is one of the more well-known rare fruit trees.

Anyways, I know it is rated for zone 10 and can handle some frost. However, as many of you already know, that is no guarantee that it will perform well in your area. (I had plants rated for Zone 10 that got destroyed by my winters while others didn't even flinched).

I'm new to Jaboticaba collecting & recently learned that they need acidic soil. I also discovered city water can be a problem too. I know some species can adapt, like Sabara & Grimal, but others not so much.

My question is can high pH defoliate or even be deadly if soil/water is left unamended?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse flooded: repot plants?
« on: February 08, 2024, 02:14:17 AM »
I have been getting some heavy rain since last week and the drain next to my greenhouse got clogged up. I just discovered my greenhouse was flooded and now most of my potted plants have soaking wet soil. My Imbu (Spondias tuberosa) died from rotten roots.

Now I'm afraid for my Marulas (Sclerocarya birrea) dying from root rot since they come from an area that has dry winters.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How often do I need to water Yucca seedlings?
« on: January 29, 2024, 02:13:10 AM »
I recently germinated some Banana Yucca (Yucca baccata) seeds. It supposed to produce one of the best Yucca fruits, tasting between a sweet potato and banana when roasted.

However, I don't how often I need to water my seedlings because this Yucca is known to be VERY drought tolerance. I'm afraid I might kill them by overwatering them.

Here's a picture of the fruit from Raindance Seeds.

I often hear there are some fruit trees that do much better in South Florida than Southern California, even if we have similar hardiness zones. I know Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and Abiu (Pouteria caimito) do much better in a Florida zone 10 than a California zone 10.

However, I was wondering the opposite. What are some plants that grow better in Southern California. The only ones I can think of are Cherimoya (Annona cherimola) and Pawpaws (Asimina triloba).

Usually I don't have a problem with a seed coat being stuck on my seedlings. However, some fruits, particularly Persimmons and Guavas, have hard seed coats that don't come off easily.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anybody growing Madd Fruit (Saba senegalese)?
« on: January 23, 2024, 09:12:47 AM »
It is a popular fruit in Africa where it's native. Supposedly it can be grown in zone 10 but I can't find confirmation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most cold hardy Spondias species?
« on: January 12, 2024, 11:37:38 PM »
I know Spondias species can grow in a subtropical climate, but I read they can be very sensitive to the cold. Right now I'm divided between getting an Ambarella (Spondias dulcis) or Jocote (Spondias purpurea).

I heard that organic fertilizers don't work well for container gardening due to the lack of microorganisms to break down the molecules to make the nutrients available to the plants.

I know Espoma's Holly-Tone is a favorite of many here due to it being design for acid-loving plants. But I'm curious how Down to Earth's Acid Mix compares to Holly-Tone.

Many of us have already gotten Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) to fruit in areas that don't get many chill hours. I've seen a fruiting Goumi berry (Elaeagnus multiflora) at Exotica Nursery, a plant that is rated up to zone 8 or 9. I'm thinking about experimenting with Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea) if I get the chance.

What has been you're experience?

Well, I'm upset. My 2 year old Mamey Sapote's (Pouteria sapota) that I grew from seed got its bark chewed all over the place. Now I'm worry the chewed portion near the roots is going to rot due to it now being exposed to the soil & water.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling tips turning black for some reason?
« on: December 30, 2023, 10:37:16 AM »
Some of my eugenia & sapote seeds recently sprouted. The seedlings look fine for the first week, but then their tips turn black. My guess is either overwatering or cold damage.

I have been having problems with my Lucuma (Pouteria lucuma) for the last couple months. The new leaves are growing deformed. Also there are tiny black spots & holes on the leaves.

I often see Citrus & Avocado fertilizers recommend for mango trees too. As many of you already know, mangoes prefer their soil on the acidic side. However, some of us live in areas where the city water and soil have a high pH (alkaline). I'm just wondering if mangoes would benefit from the same acidic fertilizers they typically recommend for blueberries.

I have a 6 feet Java Plum (Syzygium cumini) about 13 feet from a shed with a concrete foundation. I heard that Java Plums have invasive roots, but I don't if that would be a problem in dry, Southern California.

My Rose Cactus (Leuenbergeria bleo syn. Pereskia bleo) is showing some yellowing on the top. I am confused whether it's sunburn because it's has been cloudy and cold last couple weeks. Also, it has been outside for the few months doing fine.

Advice?

(It's deciduous for those wondering and produces cone-spaced fruit that taste like a sour starfruit).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ice Cream Bean Mislabeling: Inga Edulis?
« on: December 22, 2023, 02:42:48 AM »
I wondering whether or not the Ice Cream Bean tree you typically buy from nurseries is mislabeled as Inga edulis. We usually identified Ice Cream Bean species by the shape of their bean pods. However, I'm keep seeing 2 different versions of Inga edulis online.

This version is long and round.

This one is also identified as edulis, but this one is shorter & boxy. Also, this looks likes a Inga feuilleei to me instead.

I know Marula grow in sandy and well-draining soils. I'm curious whether or not cold wet roots are deadly for Marulas. I remember watching a tour of Fancyplants' garden and said he doesn't water his Marulas during the winter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Imbu (Spondias tuberosa) water requirements?
« on: December 15, 2023, 06:25:43 PM »
I'm curious how often you water this plant. I know this plant comes from the dry Caatinga region in Brazil. There, it doesn't rain for between 6 to 11 months. I planted my Spondias tuberosa in cactus & citrus potting mix for drainage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are grafted Black Sapote varieties worth it?
« on: December 12, 2023, 05:51:04 AM »
I had a Black Sapote (Diospyros nigra) fruit from a seedling before and I liked it enough. However, I'm just wondering if the grafted Sapote varieties are worth it? Unlike Florida, there doesn't seem to be local nurseries that sell named varieties. The plants & shipping are expensive so I would like to know your opinions.

I recently discovered the "Curse of the Cerrado." My plant is not liking the tap water from SoCal and its leaves are browning as a result. I changed the soil to a more sandy mix to mimic its natural environment.

You guys having any better luck?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey Sapote pest: bug or fungus?
« on: December 08, 2023, 01:28:05 AM »
I have been having problems with my Mamey Sapote (Pouteria sapota) for the last couple months. The leaves have tiny holes and the new leaves are curling. There is also some browning. I think it could be a bug, but I checked multiple times and can never find the perpetrator. I also think it could a fungus causing leaf spot or anthracnose.
