Please Help ID this Mystery Fruit from Our Forest
« on: August 07, 2022, 05:54:39 PM »
Just noticed this small understory tree fruiting today in our primary forest section of the property. Something about the way it looked I just had to try it. It tastes pretty good somewhat reminiscent of a caimito, but the flesh is insubstantial. If no one knows just from the fruit pictures, I'll see if I can get a photo of the leaves too.

The top foto certainly looks like a garcinia.
We have another fruit here that looks similar to that that maybe is in the same genus. Posoqueria latifolia
The thing is that there are so many wild fruits that are of marginal value that only people who work locally in botany are likely to know the name.
Saludos

To me it is a Garcinia brasiliense commonly known as bacupari.  A photo of the leaves would confirm.

Have some Peruvians on the case-

Seed number, color and shape do not look like brasiliensis to me

What about the foliage makes you think Solanum? No one considered that when presented with the fruit photos..

Looks kinda like Campomanesia, but usually there's a calyx on the fruit. Probably a Garcinia

I'm no expert on garcinia, or anything for that matter, but some have leaves that look like your pics.

Here is Campomanesia xanthocarpa. Veins are different, but they look a little similar.
