What's going on with this yellow sapote?

It's the only tree in my backyard with such a bad looking leaves.

I haven't seen any insect on them.

Do you hear grassphoppers / crickets at night? It's definitely insect damage. Could be leaf cutter ants, alternatively.

Looks like the work of giant grasshopper demons.

well, now that you mention it, I do have grasshoppers on my backyard, but I have never seen them in any tree but on the lawn.

today I have noticed other trees, especially a red cherimoya close to this yellow sapote have similar leaves.

I assume bees and wasps don't do this, right? because I have tons of them.

Grasshoppers for me. I can go out at night and see them munching away. Look in the day and none to be seen.

Have you looked for insects at night?

nope really, will need to have a look.

edit: just checked. No sign of any insect, but the tree is already in a very bad shape.

while watering today, I noticed a small grey-ish insect making small hops around this and other trees. It's not a grasshopper, it's smaller, about half an inch.
