10% off for TFF members.

I see one of the varieties is called Cold Hardy #8, but I can't find a description of that variety. Do you have one somewhere? What kind of cold can it handle?

I'm wanting to grow some in my greenhouse, which spends most of the winter with lows in the 40s (occasionally upper 30s, never freezing), and highs in the low 50s to mid 60s. And very little sun for a few months. Here's the current winter so far, which is pretty typical:

I have found that some things that can survive brief colder freezes in other climates can't survive even in the greenhouse due to our persistently cool winter, but some things seem more able to handle it than others. Not sure where sugar cane falls on that spectrum.

Hi We do not have cold hardy 8 available. We are unsure of its hardiness also. we sold it to many customers over the years maybe someone will report back but I don't have any data as we never got cold enough when i was growing to see any differences. I thinned out alot of varieties after maintaining them for years in the collection due to low demand and their characteristics.  I am now getting tons of interest in the cold hardy canes, go figure.

I believe most of my canes especially heirlooms are saccharum officinarum which is tropical from papa new guinea and they do not like 32f or below. I do grow some hybrids which seem a touch more resilient after a light frost. I dis have a commercial customer grow cane in a greenhouse in washington state before that sold at a farmers market with some success of my heirloom canes.

hope this helps
Luke

Thank you, I guess I'll give it a try! There's plenty of summer heat and sun in the greenhouse, so hopefully I'll get at least one good year of growth out of them.

As an aside, I got a free sugarcane plant and have it outside near a wall here in 9b which is probably quite similar to the conditions in your 8a greenhouse. It has survived some mild frosts so far, but probably will get tested more rigorously over the next 6 weeks where we usually get our lowest lows. The end of winter is in sight though, and it's been in ground an uncovered the  whole time.
