Guanabana “Soursop” tree question.
« on: May 04, 2020, 08:52:31 AM »
Hey everyone, I wanted to ask you guys for help with something. Like 2 years or more ago a family member  gave me a small tree from a seed she planted I believe  she said it was Guanabana.

tree is pretty big now I recently tried guanabana “my first time” purchased from a fruit stand and loved it also saved seeds for me to plant.

Then I bought a tree from a local nursery cause I liked fruit so much.

I’m comparing tree my family member gave me to one I bought and they look somewhat different one has bigger darker leaf “nursery one” one she gave me has smaller lighter green leaf. Also the new growth in nursery one looks like branch is green on one she gave me it looks more brown. Anyone here can guide me as to what difference may be?

I grew two guanabana trees at my old house.  Also, a friend currently has a young tree at his house.  There is variability in the size, shape, and color of the leaves from one tree to the next.  However all the pictures you are showing look like guanabana to me.

Thank you John. Yea I guess it was more of a question if there’s different varieties? And maybe leaves and growth can identify a desirable or undesirable type. Since I do not know much about them.

Pictures 1-3 do look like Guanabana.
Picture one, plant looks potbound.
Picture three, leaves have mite damage.

Picture Four, I am not sure... looks suspiciously like Pond-Apple.

For mites, you can spray with "Organocide 3-in-1" or with Neem Oil--- these only work in slow-drying weather conditions.

In Winter, you can spray mites with Sulfur, IF your sprayer has a very good agitator.

I was struggling with the same question about varieties. I don't have any guanabana trees yet because I was trying to find a superior variety and where I can get it but it is hard to find a lot of information about different varieties. I've read that there are sweet varieties and some that are not, so I wanted to make sure I got a sweet one. I think most nurseries just list them all as "guanabana"
