Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yellow strawberry guava: sun vs shade
« on: December 18, 2021, 04:58:53 PM »
I have 8 trees. 6 in full sun and two in half shade. The ones in full sun fruit months earlier, set more fruit and produce pleasant but unimpressive fruit even when thinned. They were done 3 months ago. The shaded ones weren't ready until the others were completely gone and continue till now. The fruit from the shaded are fewer but excellent, richer, sweeter, everything. Taste like a tropical version of strawberry with a hint of cloves at the end. GIve it a shot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangoes that refrigerate
« on: August 02, 2021, 01:46:18 PM »
I was watching a video this weekend and there was an interesting sidebar about mangoes that refrigerate well. I think it was Dot that supposedly tastes excellent even after 2 months of refrigeration and looking dry and wrinkly. They mention Keitt too. In another thread here bsbullie mentions Mallika dehydrates well, but that wasn't about refrigeration.

So I'm curious what varieties do this? Seems like an easy way to extend mango season.

Patrick (buddy roo ) gave me a grafted ‘1 5/8’. Named after the size of fruit in inches. He can tell us more about the history.  I’m getting my first flowers now.

First here’s the flowers and buds of every other cultivar I have:

Here’s what the bid and flower look like for 1 5/8

A friend of mine (username Whitethorn) can't remember his password and the e-mails to reset it aren't arriving in his e-mail account. He only uses one e-mail so can't create a new account.

Suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Visiting Florida late June. Suggestions?
« on: March 14, 2021, 09:31:06 PM »
Probably Stuart/west palm on June 19th & 20th. I plan to stop by Alex‘s place. Who else has mangos to taste? Excalibur? Possibly some local grocery stores with good selections?

Next weekend in the keys/Miami. There’s a mango fest in key west I believe. Also fruit and spice park? Possibly Fairchild? But I think their tastings don’t start till July.

Thanks Mark! Enjoyed seeing and chatting about your mangos, avocados and pecans. Having a hard time finding that Nocona pecan here.

You’ll have to remind me what avo this was we stood in front of.

I’m growing a hedge from 4 year old seedlings. They’re not much more than a foot tall. Some a fruiting heavily others lightly and some not at all. I’m guessing it’s random or environmental and not genetic.

Picked this big boy just now. Twice the size of most I get. From a bush with not much fruit. Thinned effect I guess.

Red on left standard green on right. Slightly more complex flavor in the red. Smaller fruit.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mulberry experiment in San Diego
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:49:13 PM »
I have ~20 mulberry seedlings from my Pakistan. I’m 95% sure they aren’t from pollenization. Closest male is 2 miles away and every fruit had seeds in the top quarter of the fruit. I’m going to grow some up and see if they are clonal. Anyone want some seedlings to join in the experiment? No shipping please.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trees that come back
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:43:31 PM »
I dug these up a couple months ago as deep as a spade would go, so about a foot deep. Neither was bigger than half an inch diameter though the roots were twice that. Both have returned quite vigorously.

Curry leaf dug up and replaced with longan. Has reappeared in four shoots.

This was a triple planted Marula  where I dug up two after approach grafting to the most vigorous. One coming back and now as tall as what I removed just a few months ago.

Do a lot of trees do this?

this is more of a butterfly question than fruit, but what varieties of citrus are the most attractive to giant swallowtails? or in fruit terms which citrus are most prone to caterpiller damage?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shade tolerant mango?
« on: June 11, 2020, 08:04:57 PM »
I have a seedling I’d like to top work and it doesn’t get full sun until around 2pm. Neighbors trees... Are there mango varieties that work better than others in partial shade?
