I've been following and am interested in views of everyone.  We're working very hard to introduce fresh yangmei to the U.S. and glad to be a part of this.  We're working extremely long hours (and no lunch break for two weeks) so I don't have time for Q&A, etc. but thought I'd share a video I recorded this evening.

Just got the purple pearl in the mail. The 'worst' ones were like a good strawberry. Still good. The best ones - evenly dark, almost black - were easily top three fruits I've ever tasted.

Harvey, I didn't know you also grow these Yangmei, thank you for your hard efforts to getting fresh Yangmei into CA and US.

You have done an amazing job with your Yangmei farm in such a short time, now we get to eat fresh fruits. I'm also growing your Delta Gold white sapote, I hope it fruits for me next year.

Excellent video showing your Yangmei farming, thanks again.

Harvey, you look healthier than before.  You definitely put figs on the maps.

Hopefully, you will do the same thing to yangmei.  When you have recuperated the yangmei cost, you start selling yangmei cuttings as well, lol.

It's interesting how we all have slightly different opinions on yangmei taste.
I tried the purple pearl ones and the darkest ones were sweet and nice and very well rounded.
It's definitely a keeper fruit, kinda like jaboticabas or something.
Not a top 5 or so, but it's pretty solid, like jaboticaba or lemon drops.
The heavy hitting fruits like mango, durian, lychee, achacha, etc are decently ahead of yangmei tastewise in my opinion.
But this is something I think is worth growing and definitely beats the weird psidiuims and some bad eugenias.
So it's not bird food ;D

Ryan, I agree with you, it's good, not the best tropical fruits. Still has a very different texture since it has no skin, so it is very interesting to see someone's reaction when they try it for the first time.

BTW, I did get full refund from Weee for the mislabeled or wrong variety they sent me (Eastern Giant). Now I'm worried when the Crystal goes on sale here if we will get the correct variety or just one of the others that they already sold for the past 2 weeks.

Well, at least Crystal should be obvious with the white/yellow outside fruit color so I would think they could not mess up the label marking on that one.

Thanks for the informative video Harvey!

I can only imagine how much work goes into growing and harvesting such a new and labor intensive crop. Without you and Calmei paving the way, many of us still wouldn’t be able to sample this delicious fruit. Please keep up the great work in producing this awesome new crop!

I was just notified by a friend that there will be about 18 lbs of Crystal Yangmei being delivered to the LA area so you may see these on Weee soon if you’re in the area.

Great to see the video Harvey!

Thank you for your and CalMei's efforts to bring this fruit over to the US- hearing about the 1905 import is pretty comical given the excitement these days

I ponied up and bought the other two varieties mainly because Crystal is my largest and most mature tree in the ground-

Unfortunately I had my first poor experience with Weee! fruit..

Luckily there were a few that were still okay so I at least got to sample it but I did request a refund

The eastern giant showed up in fine condition though!

These are in quail egg containers to get an idea of the size

So far my impressions on all 4 are that Crystal is the far and away winner- flavor just pops and is really fresh and a nice balance of acid and sweet

All three other ones are good and have their own advantages,

Eastern Giant - size; Purple pearl - flavor; Sweet violet - complexity;

but they ultimately are in the same ballpark for me

Thanks,

Daniel, the condition you got your yangmei fruit box is about it. I have ordered many many boxes from Weee. And when it is packed in those CALMEI brown flimsy boxes, the fruits all get bounced around and most are a little bruised, just like your photo. I guess I should have place more complaints like you the first time I noticed this problem with their packaging. I was so happy to taste the fruits that I just eat the ones that look bruised and give away the clean ones to friends and relatives. The other orders that come in the clear plastic clamshell boxes seems to be in much better physical condition than from CALMEI packing. CALMEI needs to learn how to pack the fragile brown package into a larger box for shipment. I'll document my next order and send them the details of how to pack it.

I just let Yunfei know about the issues with the damaged fruit in the paper boxes.

Can anyone think of an environmentally friendly way to prevent jostling the fruit in the paper boxes?

At a bare minimum some shredded paper to fill the voids, cushion the fruits and prevent movement.

Do these look like sweet violet or eastern Giant?

The small dark one is labeled as purple pearl, the larger one as sweet violet but ordered as Eastern Giant.

I’m confused on Calmei’s trademark naming. Anyone else find it weird that the trademark names cover multiple varieties?
