I am always surprised that not every plant loves Hawaii, but the cerrado background may make it most at home in CA's drier conditions. It is such an easy grower for me. I am starting to hone in on fruiting plants that more closely match my climate and it seems to be yielding positive results, guavas from the cerrado are IT!

I had a narrow leaf guava grown from seed as well. It was doing very well until one day it just started to die. Im guessing that it may be prone to phytophthora, being native to a relatively dry area. If so it might be near impossible to grow in wet and humid areas like mine -windward side of Hawaii.

Did we ever find out if P. nitida is self-fertile? I just have one now, the others inexplicably dying. If anyone still has some seeds available, please let me know. Also can trade cuttings by the end of the growing season. Thanks!

Just a note to add my experience that any seeds that I've received from Shiloh (multiple orders) have arrived very fast, well packaged, and have proceeded to germinate a high percentage (some received already germinating).

That looks like maprang to me, but mango can look very similar. If it grows slowly, it’s probably maprang. If it grows fast like a weed, it’s probably mango! But I’m a relative novice here, so maybe someone else can confirm?

Oh yes that makes sense. It will be interesting to see. My marcgraviana has germinated, which I’m overjoyed about as I had bought some of those from tradewinds a while back and they never did anything.  Still waiting to see what the stenathas do, fingers crossed on those.

During my recent move, some tags got removed from some of my seedlings - the usual story for those like me- with what seems like thousands of seedlings

Anyway, I’m wanting to approach graft a bulala seedling to my very under-performing sibabat pulasan, which I’m afraid will end up dying if I do nothing for it.

My tags were lost on what I believe are my bulala seedlings. The leaves on them are a bit different than the pulasan leaves. In this picture, the pulasan is the larger plant with lighter green leaves.

In your opinion. does the smaller plant look like bulala (Nephelium phillipensis)?

I was expecting compound leaves, but perhaps the seedling is too small yet to start producing those. Anyway, I appreciate everyone’s opinion on this.

I was at the Farm Supply Cooperative in Hilo, and saw a plant labeled “Samoan Taro”. I’m a sucker for new types of tropical vegetables, and Taro especially, so I bought it. 

After I got home and planted it though, I started wondering if this is an edible plant at all. The leaves look more arrow-head shaped. My plant identifier even identified it as Green Arrow Arum (Peltandra Virginica), which it described as a poisonous plant.

Can anyone know knows Taro well look at my pics and see if they recognize it as an edible Taro? Thanks in advance!

Oh also, is there a chance that the Pink starapple might be a Chrysophyllum argenteum var. auratum?  Or do you think it’s a green starapple? I’m good either way!
