Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: So Dry...Where's the rain?!
« on: November 16, 2023, 01:44:10 PM »
If you don't know, my area is in a huge drought...
In the last 70+ days, we've only gotten 0.42 inches of rain...
That's only 0.16 more inches than what Death Valley Got during the same time period.
The plants are so sad lol.
How is everyone else doing?
When researching land in FL, I heard that some places don't get much rain during the winter at all either.

Hope you get some good rain soon. That seems very out of the norm for y’all on that side of the Appalachian mountains. Here in Lexington, NC we would be down in rainfall amounts for the year if we didn’t get so much rain in the Summer. Now my rain barrel is empty and the ground is dry. I planted some Feijoa in September and they are looking rough even with some watering. Will have to see how they look in the Spring. We typically get a lot of our rain in September to October from tropical storm remnants and that didn’t happen this year. They are saying this Winter supposed to be wetter than normal so we will see.

Hey TFF,

I was gifted these seeds from a friend so I’m selling them for around what they go for as seeds. They need to go into  bigger deeper pots than what they are in now as they will look better in no time but I have ran out of room with the cold weather here.  I can ship these 5 semi bare root together in a large flat rate USPS box for $19. If on the East Coast shipping will be cheaper using priority or ground shipping around $10. With semi bare root I just lightly knock off any loose media that the roots aren’t holding on too, add some damp coir, wrap in damp paper towel and then wrap in cling plastic wrap.  Send a PM if interested along with zip code for an exact shipping price. Payment with PayPal Friends and Family.

Thanks,

David

Here are the pictures of the Eugenia punicifolia var Caatinga.

Here are the seedlings, I’m offering up 4, gotta leave 1 for me.

After some thought I am deciding to sell my Eugenia ternatifolia Uvaia maracujá. Only reason is I need to focus on dwarf species that can fruit well in a pot easily and not get too tall. This is a very rare species in Brazil and very ornamental with new leaves coming out reddish brown with a bright green midrib vein. Fruits are reported to taste much better than common Uvai Eugenia pyriformis with a sweeter passionfruit flavor. Apparently the leaves must taste good too as the inch worms were liking it the best. I will send it well protected inside a 18x6x6 box with guessed weight around 4.5lbs using USPS Priority shipping or UPS ground if within 4 day delivery time and weather permits. I use Pirate Ship for discounts. To get you an idea Tampa FL is $7 and CA is $15 UPS Ground or $19 UPS 3 day. There is a little room in this box to send a couple small plants so check out my other post to see those. One of those species is a very nice variety of Eugenia punicifolia with sweet fruits and smaller round tip leaves from the Caatinga. I can send them semi bare-root $8 each of 2 for $12 with no extra shipping cost. Send payment through PayPal. Any ? please PM me. Thanks and have a great day, David

This is shipping to 90210 CA

Yikes, BloomAndSprout. Did you get a confirmation # for your order? A tracking # if you got notice it shipped? I ordered on the 21st and here it is arrived on the 28th. Good luck!

Yep, I can see the order page and awaiting fulfillment, and PayPal.shows the charge.

I would contact Kameron from his support page on the website. Maybe there is some kind of “ glitch” to your order as that is unusual. I’m sure he will get it fixed quickly for you.

Ok here is the First Frost Last Call Too Special. The first that responds to this will receive 8 Psidium guineense in 2 vars which is 4 Strawberry Amazonia and 4 Cerrado, 1 Campomanesia guazumifolia,2 Geonoma pauciflora and 1 PB fruit Bunchosia glandulifera for $42 free cont USA USPS Priority shipping.I also have a couple available Eugenia punicifolia var Caatinga that can be sent semi bare-root in exchange of any plants other the the Psidium guineense. These would be $8 each. This variety has sweet fruits and smaller rounded tip leaves. I had to adjust price due to after shipping the special #1 the 2 treepots took up too much room so I had to ship in a large rate box that cost me $5 more than the medium. I just went up $6 but also added another palm seedling.

62
I’ll take em. Can’t beat that deal

Awesome you are the first! I sent you a PM.

I made a “ First Frost Special” because they are calling for a low of 28F here in NC Thursday. First person that messages that they want it will get it. $36 with free USA shipping of 10 Psidium guineense in 3 vars, 4 Morango, 4 Cerrado and 2 Caatinga and 2 Campomanesia guazumifolia. I’ve seen reports of C. guazumifolia in ground handling 15F with no damage. I don’t know the duration of that temperature but it is one of the most cold hardy Myrtaceae with good fruits.

yesterday i received the psidium seedling sampler i ordered from you.  the seedlings arrived in great shape, thanks! i'm guessing that you were growing them on the warmer side with higher humidity?  i put most of them in zip lock bags in bright windows and the rest outside.  your medium looks really good, mind sharing what it is?

Awesome to hear you are enjoying them. I grew most inside in my grow tent which temperatures go from 70 night to 85 day and humidity around 50-70%. Some were outside until recently with it getting colder here. The medium I use for Cerrado and Caatinga seedlings is around 50% peat moss 30% coarse perlite 15% vermiculite 5% sand. Those seedling will grow much faster with them planted in bigger pots with more depth. I would keep the humidity high for a little while until their roots develop in their new pots, maybe a little longer than a week, but too long will cause fungal issues on their leaves. I cover them with a clear plastic bag but still allows some fresh air at the bottom.

67
I have limited quantities left of the Psdium guineense 8 Cerrado, 8 Morango and 4 Caatinga

68
Psidium sp Caatinga Arboreo This was found as a “ tall” tree compared to the other Psidium in the Caatinga at 10 foot tall. Small green fruits.

69
Psidium sp Varzea Amazon Floodplain. Bellamy has these cheap in the clearance section.

We have nice cool cloudy weather for the next 5 days. Perfect time to acclimate to full sun. Psidium in general grows substantially better in full sun for me.

Can’t believe how much the small leaf ones greened up being in new soil.

Same here, all the Psidium I grow grows best in full sun.

71
Thanks for the Australe seedlings David, they look great! Even hooked it up with a bonus one.

Awesome to hear they are all well and you are enjoying them. Here is an Australe I have grown from seed obtained July of last year with already 1 fruit on it. Good chance your seedlings might start fruiting next year.

72
Here are some more seedlings that I have growing that I think are interesting too. This Psidium’s fruit report sounds awesome and fewer seeds. The seedling is a bright green color.

74
Congratulations on the Psidium amarelo fruiting. The taste sounds awesome! I wish I would have started growing Psidium first to get fruits fast while waiting years for most of  the others to catch up. Plus they are tough and good looking plants.

I want to show y'all this, here is 1 Psidium schenckianum that was planted in a 3” wide 8” deep treepot, they clearly grow much better in a deeper pot. Sometimes I learn the hard way on growing. I think now that in their native biome if their taproot gets dry they will go into shutdown mode like they are going into the dry period of the year. Good drainage but with consistent moisture at the tap root and good light is key. Also I highly doubt these Caatinga species will handle much more than maybe a light frost, luckily they are small enough to move around or protect.

I was quite surprised to see how well rooted these small plants were. Most of them had roots all the way down to the bottom of the cells. I am already seeing them take off some after getting into bigger pots with fresh soil. I can tell I'll be up potting fairly frequently till around 15g.

Some of these species especially ones from the Caatinga can have maybe 2 inches of top growth and 8 inches of roots. Glad to hear they are already starting to grow well for you.
