Using IPC's (Individual Protective Covers - Screening)
« on: December 29, 2022, 05:15:59 PM »
I was just reading a study by UF IFAS about using IPC's to keep psyllids off the young plants during the most vulnerable early years of tree growth. They say after 3 years the IPC can be permanently removed. I don't understand this because it is my belief that the psyllids can infect a tree of any age.

Anyone got anything on this?

Sure, all ages of trees can get greening. Its especially harmful to very young trees. As the trees get older they gain resistance and then resistance declines again in very old trees. I think the recommendation you read was for commercial groves. At some point the benefit from the covers is outweighed by the cost of new larger covers and of taking them on and off to harvest fruit etc. 3 years old is the youngest trees would typically be harvested, by the way so I think that is where that number came in. It should not be an issue for a homeowner who would like to keep their tree alive and is willing to cover and uncover the tree dutring maintenance. Coincidentally, I have been told that the covers do not need to be tied to the tree trunk as was originally thought. A lot of grove owners are leaving the bag open at the bottom end. Apparently, psylids are "lazy bugs" that won't typically fly down then back up. Having the bag lose expedites maintenance and reduces pest pressure from mealy bugs.

Eventually you will need to build a screened structure over the tree to protect it when it becomes larger.  Psyllids can infect the tree at any stage of growth, especially venerable during flushes of new growth.

Good reading here regarding mesh density required to control HLB psyllids. I was about to order some mesh screening from Amazon but after reading this I'm glad I didn't. It takes a 40-mesh or 50-mesh to exclude an HLB psyllid. Psyllids are 1/16 - 1/8 inch, and Amazon sellers don't list the mesh size. I am awaiting a return call from  my county extension for help locating a couple of pieces of the correct mesh to use for my Sugar Belle (just arrived yesterday and it's a really nice one).

Maybe I should research no-seeum screen, which should be pretty easy to locate.

Ebay also sells these net.  You can contact the vendors to ask the screen size.
