5 years...then mine are due....a little disappointed by the resinous skin , is it like the latex in the caimito skin Adam ?

Your Vexator tree is such a gorgeous plant and it's growing in a pot

...I would definitely grow these fruit tree in a heart beat.

Congrat's on eating them first fruits from your tree

Resin is flavor to me...I luv a fruit with a kick

Yeah, that bitter, tannic skin was a real turn off to me. It was good to hear, from Adam, that the surgical removql of the skin without the use of one's teeth would leave the eater with a much better taste in his or her mouth. I am going to give this fruit a second tasting using this method. The trees are so nice looking and easy to grow.

Gene from the broward rare fruit council said that if you roll the fruit between your thumb and forefinger, it somehow causes the tanins to dissipate.

My two ~5 year old trees puped out some flowers finally this year but still no fruit yet. They are rilly ornamental and seem to have a vigorous root system. They don't seem to mind alkaline püüp soil.

No I don't think so...the skin has a resinous taste that I associate with eating an early grumichama...or getting a bitter taste of grumichama skin or flesh...but with a twist of a lemon tartness. Definitely somewhat similar to some of the eugenia fruits that you might say have a tannic taste (surinam cherry, cedar bay cherry, etc.)

When you fertilize and water the tree properly, the berries get so large that there is enough gelatine like pulp in the fruit to satisfy the eater, even though the seeds and skin make up a large portion of the fruit.

The texture is very nice, and the taste is much different to me than any of the other myrciarias I've had.

But yes Luc, don't expect to pick these and eat them right off the bush like a regular jabo...u will probably not like the tart resinous taste left on your teeth.

when i recently repotted this tree from a 15 to a 25gal, I chose a mixture that drained much too fast...and to keep it from wilting, I had to put it in a kiddie pool.

it makes water disappear...and mosquitoes never get a chance to hatch...I fill the pool about 20% every 4 days...even with heavy rains.

Seriously Adam, the pictures are wonderful, so when one does a google search for images of a particular rare cultivar, they now have something for a reference. It is nice when you are researching which trees to buy, or to know what the fruits will look like someday when your trees get mature enough.

BTW I just picked up a pound of sabarah jabos locally, and they were very nice. I'm still on the fence of my consumption practices: whether or not to spit out the seeds. First instinct is to spit them out, but then again, chewing the seeds adds a bit of tartness at the end of the eating experience.

Try to eat the whole fruit including the skin. Your body will thank you! Lots of good stuff in whole jabuticaba. In Brasil, lots of research done! You can also dry the skin and make a powder to sprinkle in your food!

My vexators are flowering up a storm!

They absolutely love having their own personal kiddie pools, with 4-6 inches of water, to make sure they never get thirsty!

I notice the flower buds swell up into white balls, about the size of a q-tip cotton tip...but they stay that size, for what seems like 7 days before finally bursting open as in the picture.

I might have to provide a greenhouse for this plant to save its fruits from cold damage this season....they take forever (compared to most other plinia/myrciaria) to ripen...staying on the tree for over 50 days or so.

Flower smell very nice!

BTW...Candolleana decided to bloom like crazy on the same day as the vexator! Coincidence? or psychic phenomenon...U decide!!!

This Myrciaria vexator has been in the same 25 gal pot for over 4yr. I had been keeping it saturated for months, in a kiddie pool, to avoid having to put it into a new container (pots and good soil is expensive). Here she is in her new home...a 45 gal pot. Anything larger than 50 gal is very hard to work with by yourself, I kind of struggled with this one, but managed to get it in the pot...the root ball weighed over 100lb because it was so saturated
