I have avocados "fresh from the farm" in CA, untreated and unadulterated in any way.  If I want to start seedling trees from some of the seeds, what's the best method?  Here's the catch.  My family and I are going on a 2-week trip from the end of May to almost the middle of June.  I need to start this project when I return so how best to store the seeds until then?  Would refrigerating them be okay?  Thanks, guys.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spring Rain on the Way for South Florida?
« on: April 06, 2023, 02:53:28 PM »
If you look at the 10-day forecast, it shows rain on the way starting Sunday.  Hopefully this has a positive impact on mango retention for mangos that are still developing towards May/June ripening.  Any that are already being harvested are bound to suffer some flavor/brix loss.  What do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Murray Atemoya
« on: February 17, 2023, 02:03:11 PM »
Chris Wenzel says that the Murray atemoya tastes the most like cherimoya, AND she has scions available right now for those who would like to grow this variety.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DkR93J_d5E

The mighty Lula tree in my neighborhood still has fruit at the top.  It was literally a stretch, but I managed to pick me a bucket!  I revere this tree.  I started picking in late September.

Citrus General Discussion / Noble Juicy Crunch Tangerine
« on: January 17, 2023, 03:25:40 PM »
Since I know forum members are fruit connoisseurs, I thought y'all might like to know about this new tangerine, Juicy Crunch.  I came upon it by chance at Sprouts, and it's super sweet (very high brix), tasty, and seedless--an all-around exceptional fruit.  It's available at Publix and Whole Foods, too.  Check it out.  You won't be disappointed!  You can read the whole story at this website: https://noblecitrus.com/

End of season Monroe avocados. My box had 5 avocados, which weighed about 9.5 lbs. Beautiful fruit!

Which are the mango varieties that will set fruit every year in South Florida and do not depend on a certain kind of winter weather to stimulate blossoming?  Since we can no longer depend on consistent periods of cold in the winter, I think this would be good information to have.  Are Angie, Pickering, Cac, Honey Kiss, Little Gem, Sugarloaf, M-4, Orange Sherbet, PPK, and Lemon Zest in this group?  Others?  Thank you.  (I hope Alex reads this.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Homegrown Lula vs. Supermarket (Mexican) Hass
« on: October 27, 2022, 02:54:16 PM »
There's a Lula avocado tree in my community, which is at least 40 ft. tall and loaded with fruit this year.  I've never seen so many avocados on one tree.  With my 25-ft. pole I've been picking a bucket a week for almost a month now.  I like them way more than the Mexican Hass that all the supermarkets around here sell.  Better quality, better flavor, even though Hass is considered a superior variety, which it indisputably is when grown, harvested, and processed properly.

(Fucking Mexican cartels!  Mexico--where human life has no value.  And I'm not speaking of the vast majority of Mexicans, who are kind, gracious, and generous people--they suffer and die also, especially indigenous people, because no government, army, and law enforcement are more corrupt.  Why are our supermarket chains supporting the cartels?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help Me I D Banana Variety
« on: October 14, 2022, 02:00:19 PM »

This banana plant was sold to me by a nursery in WPB as "Goldfinger."  They said it was started from a tissue culture.  However, I've found no picures on the internet of Goldfinger leaves that look like this with the brown patches.  I have found Dwarf Cavendish pictures that look like this, and also found information that says it's a characteristic of the immature leaves of Grand Nain and Cavendish.  Also, the plant seems to be dwarf compared to the Raja Puri I'm growing nearby (which has had big leaves and a stout trunk from the start), and I don't believe Goldfinger is a dwarf variety.  Can anyone with banana knowledge help me out?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Mangos from India Grown in Florida?
« on: September 02, 2022, 03:35:43 PM »
I've read that many Indian mangos don't reach their full flavor potential in Florida or don't produce well and consistently due to our different climate.  So which varieties are best when grown in Florida?  I don't want to eliminate USDA Himsagar even though it's probably not the Himsagar actually grown in India because I tasted it this summer, and it was very good.  A big plus would be if the tree were compact and dwarfish.  I apologize if some version of this topic has been covered before, but as we've had more experience with Indian mangos in the last few years, I think it's worthwhile to find out what the consensus might be.  India is the mango's motherland, after all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling Orange Sherbet Mango Tree
« on: August 07, 2022, 01:46:01 PM »
Does my seedling OS tree look the same as a grafted tree? It's supposed to be a polyembryonic variety, but the leaves seem a little delicate to me, unlike any other mango tree.

(I know it's too close to the house, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do in this seniors' community!)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hall Avocado
« on: July 30, 2022, 12:21:41 PM »
Are any members growing the Hall avocado?  Can you tell me about its ripening dates, productivity, and flavor?  Also, growth characteristics?  Would it be along the same lines as Simmonds, Choquette, or Monroe as far as oil content and flavor?  Or perhaps a little denser (drier) and more flavorful like Lula?  Anything else you can tell me about this variety and whether it's worth growing?  I'm looking for something that starts ripening in the fall a couple months before Monroe kicks in.  Thank you, friends.  Even if you tasted it and didn't like it, let me know.  I know it's one of the "SlimCados."  God, I hate that name!

Honey Kiss

Orange Sherbet
Isn't it crazy how different they are?

I had a few relatives over, and we tasted Cac, Dupuis Saigon, Peach Cobbler, and two different seedlings.  Everyone agreed that Cac was the best, but surprisingly the seedling fruit (which in a previous thread I had mistaken for Kent) came in second.  Peach Cobbler was third (we all tasted tangerine), but it may not have been the best representative of this variety.  Unfortunately, a Venus mango was still too hard to be included.  The last two Cac I've tasted have been almost identical in flavor to the Mahachanok mangoes I grew in the past--with floral and cola notes and super-sweet without acidity.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID Mango Variety
« on: July 08, 2022, 06:16:32 PM »
What mango variety is this? Large, fiberless, beautiful fruit. The flesh is very orange near the seed, the rest yellow. The flavor is mild, has some acidity, reminds me of raisins (sort of metallic, too) with resin near the skin.  "K" only means it came from Ken's tree--a tall tree, seems vigorous, but not horizontally spreading.  Of course, it could be a seedling, like so many mature trees around here seem to be.

I only need one pup of each.  Does anyone in Broward or PB County have both at this time?  Or even one or the other?

After a bumper crop last year, our Mauritius tree is doing nothing so far.  It sure is looking healthy, however.  Is anyone getting bloom on their trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 10-Year Anniversary: The Tropical Fruit Forum
« on: February 27, 2022, 08:41:32 AM »
The 10-year anniversary of this mighty forum came and went last month, and I don't think anyone noted it.  It's my only social media, and I've enjoyed the heck out of it and learned a lot.  (Well, I watch YouTube, too, and make stupid comments there.)  Everyone I've met in person has been super-cool.  I have to believe we're making the world with all its troubles a better place!  (As my generation might say, Make Fruit, Not War.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Sapote for South Florida?
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:11:45 PM »
Does anyone have opinions/experience regarding white sapote in South Florida?  What would be the best variety to plant?  Where to get it?  Pine Island Nursery? Lara?

(Regarding my guerrilla tree-planting scheme in my "no-fruit-trees" senior community, I found a good spot to plant a sapodilla tree where it should go unnoticed until it's "too late," meaning already bearing fruit. The lady who lives in the nearest house is from Jamaica, and she said, "Be my guest." I decided on Alano since it's also a beautiful tree.  I'll be replacing a flowering tree that's almost dead.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey Sapote Trees
« on: January 07, 2022, 03:24:33 AM »
How big do they get in South Florida?  What's the best variety on a small tree if there is such a thing?  Can you keep them a certain size by regular pruning?  Is green sapote a better option if you're looking for a small tree?
