Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can a Pickering of this size produce?
« on: September 21, 2023, 02:22:54 PM »
I say yes, too.  One thing you should know about Pickering is that it can set hundreds of fruit, but 90% of them will fall off, still leaving you with plenty of fruit.  Whatever your tree holds until maturity next season will be the proper number for a tree of that size.  I'd say you might get a dozen.  Exciting, isn't it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this Atemoya or cherimoya?
« on: September 21, 2023, 11:30:00 AM »
It's a cherimoya, Playa. Atemoya has mutant looking skin especially the African pride. Cherimoya has flat and symmetrical skin and bumps.
I didn't know that was an easy way to tell them apart.  What do you mean by "mutant looking?"  Rough, as opposed to smooth?

Good setup for Marijuana

Haha yeah most of the stuff came with guides on growing marijuana lol

If the new cannabis law passes in 2024 Floridians will be able to grow up to 9 plants 👍🏼
For personal consumption only, I would imagine.  Sounds like fun.  VA has that law already.

I grew up eating Black Mission figs.  They say there are better figs, but these were always amazing to me, eating them at various stages of ripeness.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: One of my avocado selection

I have a real bad experience regarding avocado trees from FL and PR. They all died. I can give it a try one more time if it is worth to try though. I will buy it only during the winter season.
If I were in CA, I don't think I'd mess with avocado trees from FL or PR.

It seems much bigger than Hass so it may not be Lamb Hass. Could it be some kind of Pinkerton's off spring?
Does Pinkerton ever get that fat?

I don't know but when it grows out from a seedling it can be something very different and wild.
Right, you did say "offspring."

I have Wurtz, Maria Black, and Day.

So far all are staying compact.
But I don't think they're for NorthCal.

It looks very productive. I love it. What kind of variety is it?
He's developed his own varieties in PR.  One is called Lolo.

(I know this was posted a while back, but I see Ado still checks in.)  It could be a Hass seedling.  How was the quality of the fruit?  How big was the seed?  Is it worth propagating?

Nice.  Which one?  How big is the seed?

Gwen?  (If it likes your climate.)  I know we have CA avocado people.  I hope they weigh in.

I am not excusing shitty behavior at all, and in most cases I am sure people know they are stealing and don't care, but I wonder if this is partly because people don't value things they don't understand.
No, people don't value things they don't understand. I've been fighting my HOA board who want to destroy my garden.  Not one gardener on that board, and their houses look like shit landscape-wise.  They don't even appreciate beauty/aesthetics.  They're perfectly happy to turn the community into a barren wasteland as long as no one is violating the rules they arbitrarily created.

I think people rationalize stealing fruit because their idea is you won't miss whatever fruit they choose to steal.  Other people like the thrill, as well.  Yes, I guess a gun pointed at them wouid make them re-evaluate unless they come back with their own guns and shoot your place up.

I followed the instructions here about keeping them in the fridge so they wouldn't ripen.  BIG MISTAKE!  The last three avocados subsequently ripened unevenly with interior gray spots and a texture in places that resembled cooked potato.  This is something I never experienced when I had my Simmonds tree.  I think that most likely they would have been alright if I hadn't refrigerated them, so keep this in mind if you order these avocados.  I'm not slamming the grower, but I thought this was important information.

Last year I planted both Better Boy and Beefmaster.  Better Boy was a dud (in SoCal it was wildly successful), but Beefmaster worked out well.  I think most cherry-type tomatoes do well here.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Kent mango with green skin . . . .
« on: September 05, 2023, 10:07:40 AM »
Ladies and gentlemen, we are at peak Mexican Kent season. I picked up a dozen Kents at Aldi last week and they were absolute perfection.  Deep orange flesh, smooth as butter, and sweet like Sunny D. Relatively undersized as Kents go, but packed a flavor punch in a small package.
Now I know that store bought mangos have a poor reputation, but these Kents were better than most of the FL grown mangos I had shipped to me this year.  At $.59 each, it was a steal. Get ‘‘em before they’re gone.
When I lived in L.A. (prior to 1989), I ate a lot of great Kent mangos from Mexico.  They've got the science down when it comes to growing Kent, or Kent really loves the terroir!  All the other varieties coming out of Mexico were always so-so.  I'm glad to know I'm not just imagining this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rosigold v. Dwarf Hawaiian?

Personally, I would prefer waiting a few weeks for a better tasting mango.  By all accounts Dwarf Hawaiian is the better tasting mango unless you don't like its flavor profile.  (Disclosure: I've never tasted either one.)

Bananas are technically plants, not trees. Trees make bark
And wood!  But still very nice of this member to give away these banana plants.  :)

It's one tree that says "South Florida coast."  The pre-conquest indigenous people derived a lot of nutritional value from them.  You can't live on seafood and wild game alone.  I didn't know they grew along the Cuban coast, too.  That's pretty cool.  I've tasted them, but never had any I'd call great.
If you've seen them growing all over FL but never seen a ripe fruit, I gotta think you haven't been looking too closely.

Nice tree and harvest!

I planted a sweetheart instead of a Brewster and it grows so slowly I’m about to dig it up and plant a different variety. My friends Brewster a few miles away it’s giant.

Enjoy that fruit.,. Looks great
Have you tried Mauritius?  I like that fruit--very flavorful.  The neighborhood tree is very large, but I don't know if it's a vigorous grower when young.  There's nothing sharp about the exterior of the fruit.

Nice looking trees. Is there a reason you have them on cinder blocks? Just curious.
So they drain well?  Avocado trees don't like wet roots.

If you bought a tissue culture banana plant from Florida Hill, who knows what you got.  Tissue culture banana plants get mislabeled all the time and on top of that Florida Hill has a horrible reputation for mislabeled plants.  Who knows what you got.  It could be anything.  The bummer is you won't know for 1-2 years.  Buyer beware.

Bill
Yes, I bought such a banana plant labeled "Goldfinger" from a nursery in WPB, but I brought it back almost immediately as the leaves indicated that it was actually Dwarf Cavendish.  They gave me a full refund.

I could sure get into atemoya growing if I had a large yard/lot.  Maybe someday before I die!  If I'm lucky, I've got twenty years left.
