Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling Orange Sherbet Mango Tree
« on: August 07, 2022, 01:46:01 PM »
Does my seedling OS tree look the same as a grafted tree? It's supposed to be a polyembryonic variety, but the leaves seem a little delicate to me, unlike any other mango tree.

(I know it's too close to the house, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do in this seniors' community!)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hall Avocado
« on: July 30, 2022, 12:21:41 PM »
Are any members growing the Hall avocado?  Can you tell me about its ripening dates, productivity, and flavor?  Also, growth characteristics?  Would it be along the same lines as Simmonds, Choquette, or Monroe as far as oil content and flavor?  Or perhaps a little denser (drier) and more flavorful like Lula?  Anything else you can tell me about this variety and whether it's worth growing?  I'm looking for something that starts ripening in the fall a couple months before Monroe kicks in.  Thank you, friends.  Even if you tasted it and didn't like it, let me know.  I know it's one of the "SlimCados."  God, I hate that name!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Different New Mango Leaves

Honey Kiss

Orange Sherbet
Isn't it crazy how different they are?

I had a few relatives over, and we tasted Cac, Dupuis Saigon, Peach Cobbler, and two different seedlings.  Everyone agreed that Cac was the best, but surprisingly the seedling fruit (which in a previous thread I had mistaken for Kent) came in second.  Peach Cobbler was third (we all tasted tangerine), but it may not have been the best representative of this variety.  Unfortunately, a Venus mango was still too hard to be included.  The last two Cac I've tasted have been almost identical in flavor to the Mahachanok mangoes I grew in the past--with floral and cola notes and super-sweet without acidity.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID Mango Variety
« on: July 08, 2022, 06:16:32 PM »
What mango variety is this? Large, fiberless, beautiful fruit. The flesh is very orange near the seed, the rest yellow. The flavor is mild, has some acidity, reminds me of raisins (sort of metallic, too) with resin near the skin.  "K" only means it came from Ken's tree--a tall tree, seems vigorous, but not horizontally spreading.  Of course, it could be a seedling, like so many mature trees around here seem to be.

I only need one pup of each.  Does anyone in Broward or PB County have both at this time?  Or even one or the other?

For those of you who use bagged mulch in your garden (weed suppression, moisture retention, appearance, breakdown into humus), Lowe's has their spring sale going on until April 17.  $2 a bag.

After a bumper crop last year, our Mauritius tree is doing nothing so far.  It sure is looking healthy, however.  Is anyone getting bloom on their trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 10-Year Anniversary: The Tropical Fruit Forum
« on: February 27, 2022, 08:41:32 AM »
The 10-year anniversary of this mighty forum came and went last month, and I don't think anyone noted it.  It's my only social media, and I've enjoyed the heck out of it and learned a lot.  (Well, I watch YouTube, too, and make stupid comments there.)  Everyone I've met in person has been super-cool.  I have to believe we're making the world with all its troubles a better place!  (As my generation might say, Make Fruit, Not War.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Sapote for South Florida?
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:11:45 PM »
Does anyone have opinions/experience regarding white sapote in South Florida?  What would be the best variety to plant?  Where to get it?  Pine Island Nursery? Lara?

(Regarding my guerrilla tree-planting scheme in my "no-fruit-trees" senior community, I found a good spot to plant a sapodilla tree where it should go unnoticed until it's "too late," meaning already bearing fruit. The lady who lives in the nearest house is from Jamaica, and she said, "Be my guest." I decided on Alano since it's also a beautiful tree.  I'll be replacing a flowering tree that's almost dead.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey Sapote Trees
« on: January 07, 2022, 03:24:33 AM »
How big do they get in South Florida?  What's the best variety on a small tree if there is such a thing?  Can you keep them a certain size by regular pruning?  Is green sapote a better option if you're looking for a small tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The Best Christmas Tree is Any Fruit Tree

I hope Santa brings everyone at least one fruit tree!
Merry Christmas.

(I borrowed that line from Chris at TT.)
Broward/PB/MD members, I have an Orange Sherbet tree (3-gal. seedling: polyembryonic) for one lucky member as a Christmas gift from me.  This is a top-tier variety.  You know you want it!  PM me.  Merry Christmas to all!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / South/Central Florida Cold Fronts
« on: November 07, 2021, 08:25:42 AM »
We woke up to the first what-we-call-cold morning of the fall/winter season, but it feels great!  59 in Deerfield Beach/Boca Raton.  We can use this thread to track and comment on our cold fronts.  Hopefully we eventually see some nights in the 40's to get all the fruit trees blossoming, including lychees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Holy Sh*t! How NOT to Trim a Mango Tree
« on: October 11, 2021, 02:22:05 PM »

Not to disrespect anybody, but...the knucklehead tree trimmers were hard at work in my community trimming all the trees for big bucks.  "Our contract is to trim side branches only."  All trees were treated as shade trees.  They weren't even aware this was a mango tree, I guess, but it really didn't make any difference to them.  The owner of the 15-year-old tree didn't seem too upset--I was more upset than him--but he admitted it was a stupid way to trim a mango tree.

This is a seedling tree, and I was impressed with the flavor of the fruit this year.  Fortunately my next-door neighbor knows how to graft and has produced and planted two more trees (in the "no-fruit-trees-allowed" community).  I hope to share it with more people for evaluation in the future.  It's an early mango with a very bright flavor--nice sugar/acid balance.  The parent tree's fruit has a mild coconut flavor.  This mango is something completely different in flavor and appearance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugarloaf vs. Piņa Colada Mango
« on: July 29, 2021, 10:28:53 PM »
Those of you who have tasted both, how would you compare the two?  What's the difference in flavor?  Which do you consider the better-tasting mango?  What about consistency in production and disease resistance?  Is Piņa Colada a smaller, less vigorous, more manageable tree?  Are Sugarloaf trees showing moderate vigor?  Thanks.

Costco is selling them, and they're cheap.  But they're garbage.  Hass avocados picked immature with no oil content.  What could be worse than a watery Hass avocado??

Mango and Meditation Master Satya makes a great video, featuring an awesome manatee, who steals the show!  PPK vs. LZ vs. OS vs. Mallika.  Still not the ultimate showdown, which might also include Orange Essence, Peach Cobbler, and Seacrest?

I found a jackfruit tree in a public park not too far away.  The tree is huge, and it's loaded with fruit, some quite large.  How can you tell a ripe jackfruit?  What is the normal SoFlo season for jackfruit?

My next door neighbor is a cool guy and likes to garden.  His wife calls him a farmer.  But in one very significant way he's different than any forum member.
"Jorge, what kind of mango did you plant?  It's growing well."
"I don't know.  I grafted it from Ed's tree over there."

"What kind of avocado is this, Jorge?"
"I don't know.  I got the wood from a little tree I saw growing in front of one of the villas."

"Wow, Jorge!  Your grapevine has lots of grapes.  That's so cool.  What kind of grape is it?"
"I don't know.  I got it from my brother."

"Hey, John, would you like some bananas?  I just cut down the stalk."
"Heck yes!  What variety is it?  Does it have a name?"
"No.  You can name it whatever you want."

So...this 55+ community has stupid rules against fruit trees but plenty of space for additional trees.  I say F 'em!  The ex-New Yorkers who currently sit on the HOA board wouldn't know a fruit tree until the fruit is actually staring them in the face (by which time there will be a new board), and I don't think the gardeners from Mexico/Central America would remove them. There are already many mature mango trees and quite a few avocado trees.  I don't see most of the avos with fruit, however.  I've already mentioned wanting to surreptitiously plant a sapodilla tree.  What other suggestions do you have?  White sapote, caimito, tamarind, mamey sapote, carambola, guava all seem like worthy candidates.  I wouldn't try to plant everything at once.  Sneak a few in per year.  See how it goes.
