Fruit seasons for South Florida
« on: August 26, 2014, 07:29:22 PM »
First time posting but I've learned most of what I know about tropical fruit trees from Purdue, UF, University of Hawaii, Gardenweb, and this forum. I've gotten a lot of great information, but I'm still not really sure what grows when down here so I thought I'd try and put a list together. I know that weather plays a part, so this is just a general list. If I've gotten anything wrong or missed anything let me know so I can edit it in.

Year round
Annona muricata
Banana
Fig
Guava
Papaya
Pomegranate
Sapodilla (Makok)
Rollinia?
Jaboticaba?
Canistel?

Winter/Spring:
Avocado
Annona Reticulata: March-April
Black sapote
Cacao
Caimito
Canistel
Carambola
Green sapote

My Florida avo was done fruiting in July, carambola all summer still have fruit, papaya year round, muscadine grapes summer/fall, Annona right about now, Makok sapodilla year round so far, bananas sometimes year round, and my grumichama, peaches and Jaboticaba were done in may.

If my canistel had set fruit it would have been eaten already.

It looks like some of my stuff is out of sync with yours :-)

What variety of carambola do you have? I think I might edit the list by variety instead of by fruit name since some fruits don't have one set season (sapodilla, white sapote, jackfruit)

Also how well do those peaches grow down here?

I have a Bell, Kari, and Kajang.

My producing peach is a tropic Sweet, they have been small as I haven't thinned the fruit but they are delicious.

In March I put in a tropic beauty, but I don't expect fruit for another season or two. It's grown a LOT this summer.

If atemoya season is about now, how come my tree has flowers and no fruit ?
If flowers and fruit will not survive winder months, should I remove them from the tree as they come out ?

Flowers and fruit will survive the winter unless it frosts or if the tree is too young (or doesn't get pollinated) the flowers will just drop.

My Geffner has been flowering and setting fruit all summer, but so far I've lost all the fruit to seed borers and black fungus. I tried bagging the remaining fruits to see how they do.
