Sunburn on abiu fruit
« on: June 25, 2023, 07:08:07 PM »
This is the second year I'm getting a large crop in my abiu tree.
I noticed this last year as well but after vertical branch snapped all the fruit that formed exposed to the midday sun had brown scalds on it. Doesn't seem to affect the flavor that much but it misshapes the fruit. I don't scoop it right up to the brown scalds though.

My tree grows very lanky so that doesn't help, anyone else has this problem?

Yes, I have had fruits like that. It is very uncommon for me to have fruits that sunburnt though.

Its possible but sunburn is not usually so defined. I have a big fruited selection of z4 that pumps out fruit all year around. I got one off it last week that was over 5oog and the biggest  can reach 1kg. If I could remember how to post pics I would send pics. I have been prectising propogating latelt and cleft grafting is tough and marcotting is very hard with abiu but side grafting works.

To me it looks more like the sort of damage a fungus would do but i don't know anything about abiu in particular.
Keep planting and nobody explodes

I'll show some pictures of the fruit on the tree.
Most of the burn seems to happen when the fruit was small.
None of the interior fruit or fruit on the lower branches was affected.

Hey Mike,

What is side grafting? Can you elaborate further.

Thanks,

Joe
