Ambika Mango
« on: July 23, 2024, 10:48:18 AM »
i want to add as many red mangoes to my grove as possible so that when i start my breeding program i can cultivate the next best hybrid that will combine an outstanding flavor with a show stopping blush. Ambika looks to be one of the most beautiful mangoes on the market but i cant find much information about it and few people i know of here have it in the United States. Any information about flavor profile, flesh texture and firmness, disease and tree production would be greatly appreciated.

My fruited for one year, i just cut back the multigrafted section.
It was vigorous and upright in growth habit.

Nothing interesting in the taste or texture.
It had some disease problems, MBBS

Classic flavored. Big and red. Nothing special. If I find my pic of it I'll post. 'Rapoza' and 'Fernandin' get red as well. 'Fernandin' can get some outstanding colors.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Arunika mango can be better alternative than Ambika. It is prettier ( more red) , taste wise better , tree is more dwarf ( can be planted in pot),  earlier than Ambika. The fruit size is smaller than Ambika.

Ah ping and Irwin can be best parent for red fruit traits and early season. I dont know about theit taste.

Oh wow thank you for the insight. That looks like a promising collection. Id be interested to try each of them and compare. would arunika be your preferred red mango? I have Irwin in my grove already but ah ping is on the top of my list as well.

Benefits of Ambika in Tampa for me are how late it is, last year they were August in mid Sept and how productive it is without spraying. No issues with disease pressures. It is an upright more aggressive grower. It’s a firm texture, classic flavor. To me it’s like Ah Ping in lots of ways just three months later till it’s ready.

Arunika is not my preferred red mango. Its taste is better than Ambika  but still well below best mangoes from India. Also arunika is late season mango.
I will prefer early red mangoes like Irwin, Ah ping. Which are adapted to your florida region. NMBP 1243 is earlier than Irwin. So its my dream red mango.  :D

This is great news. I need more late season varieties. I appreciate the insight.

Loved Rapoza and want to get my hands on a tree. I did a search on Fernandin. It sounds interesting. Thank you for sharing.

I want to know why you are you preferring late red mangoes? I am just curious.
Have you tasted the 'planet' mangoes by Dr Richard Campbell. I think all of them are early.

Crimson Delight

Crimson Delight is another one on the top of my list. Do you have any experience with this mango?

I planted a Crimson Delight last year. The fruit are pretty decent sized (1-2lbs). Didn't taste it. Might have fruit by 2026

Piva is a deep, rich color of red all over (I'd call it burgundy). Flavor hasn't been anything close to special, but the fruit is beautiful.

have you noticed anything remarkable about the growth habit? disease resistance or possible lack there of?
