Wanted: Banana Varieties
« on: August 26, 2025, 01:45:42 AM »
Best place to buy banana pups? No Tissue Culture allowed. I am specifically looking for varieties that grow well in the northwest Florida region Zone 9A.

Varieties like:
Dwarf Namwa
Tall Namwa
Dwarf Brazilian
Raja Puri
Dwarf Kokopo/Patupi
Pisang Ceylon (Improved Mysore)
Dwarf Orinoco
Tall Orinoco
Blue Java (real)
SH-3640 (High Noon)

What varieties am I missing?

I've heard the shorter thicker stemmed varieties tend to have more cold tolerance. I also like the shorter varieties because they are less prone to toppling when the racks fill out.

Dwarf Namwah has been awesome in Jacksonville.  Probably my favorite, very sweet and actually juicy if you can imagine a banana being juicy.  Very stout, thick trunk and good looking.  Has been through many freezes with leaf burn but no trunk dieback

I sell some of these.  Do a search for my listing here.  Right now the only variety I have available to ship is California Gold.  It is very cold hardy, stays short and never needs propping.  It is excellent when cooked as a plantain.  It can be eaten fresh and is very good, not excellent, but very good.  It is a good dual purpose variety.  2 gallon plants are $35 plus shipping.
