Florida Variegated banana losing variegation
« on: December 13, 2025, 01:31:16 PM »
This plant was strongly variegated when I bought it last summer, but it gradually lost most of its variegation as it overwintered indoors under lights.  This summer it regained a little of its variegation, but was still mostly green.  How can I avoid this next season?

I saw something at one tine saying PH level can affect it.  I cant remember if it was too high or too low that caused it to lose the stripes.  You will have to search "AEAE PH variegation" or something like that to see which way.

I was not adjusting the pH, so that could be the problem.  Next year I will be more mindful of it.

In AeAe a lower ph will cause more variegation. Maybe the same is true for the Variegated Florida.

Growing on limestone (8.0 ph) for over a year, no amendments.

Yours looks like it is growing in the shade.  Mine was in roughly full sun most of the day.  Could that have reduced its variegation?

Perhaps. Mine definitely gets a bit of shade, but also several hours of direct sun. The original plant already produced fruit, and now on the 2nd round. Its been more like 2 years in ground, but would have to check my records.

Doesn’t the Florida variegated lose its variegation when it matures? I’m pretty sure I read it somewhere on this forum.
