Keeping rambutan happy in pots ?
« on: August 12, 2025, 12:59:03 PM »
Germination is fine but after a couple weeks they start to look chlorotic and slowly start to die. I’ve noticed they don’t like regular potting soil or heavy/ locally made soil either. haven’t completely given up on them but just wondering if anyone has had similar issues and able to create a soil mix that keeps rambutan happy in pots. Any recommendations are appreciated

I had exactly the same experience with rambutan.  User W. mentioned he had them growing healthy in pure compost, I've been meaning to try that next

They grow well for me in my mix of clay loam with manures and coco fiber.

Thinking about it, they come up as volunteers all over the place wherever they’re eaten. I don’t know if that helps but I never bury these kinds of seeds. I simply push them slightly into the medium and keep them moist.

Mine did really well
If I had to bet $, I could fruit it in TN
Just my hot take lol
But it got too cold in my greenhouse and it froze. But it was grafted from PR
And I’ve seen some small ones flowering before.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I like the idea of using coco fiber and the plants I bet would like that. My goals are not to grow rambutan in maturity in pots but even to keep them happy in nursery pots until they get planted in the ground or are sold. Last year I planted well over 100 and most died. The round I planted this year are starting to sprout and thinking i will transplant into a locally sourced mix of the following - 1 parts cinder, 1 part potting soil and 1 part compost.

Let us know how you get on with this. I had a decent sized rambutan in a 20gal container that was in heavy soil. I got to it too late and cleaned it off and repotted it but it died. My aim was also to get it a little further before it went to the ground.
