My First Silas Wood
« on: October 12, 2025, 01:35:48 PM »
I picked up a Silas Wood Sapodilla from Xain last summer, and today, I picked my first fruit. It ripened fully (soft) on the tree and I immediately brought it inside for a taste. Wow!  Extremely sweet brown sugary goodness. I don’t think that I could eat more than a couple at a time they are so sweet.

The tree itself hasn’t grown very much. About a month after planting, it dropped its fruit and half its leaves which made me a bit worried but in spring, it bounced back and shot out a little new growth and a ton of flowers. It’s been doing great since then. I tipped the central leader earlier in the year and want it to start branching. It’s only about 3’ tall now and it probably has 20 fruits of various sizes tucked under the lower branches. I pulled all fruit off the top of the central leader which seems to have encouraged it start growing a couple new branches at the top.

Thanks for the tip. I suspect a chest freezer and freeze dryer are in my not-so-distant future. Especially once the jackfruits start producing…

I’m not totally sure since this tree flowers and sets new fruit every few months but this one would have been from the first flowers this spring. I would guess 6-7 months.

Nice work and a great Sapodilla variety that everyone should grow.

I put mine in the ground just about a year ago as a freshly grafted 1 gallon. Now it's about knee high with fruit on every branch terminal. Mostly tiny ones but a few big ones that should ripen soon.
