5 year old Pulasan trees both male !!!!
« on: December 01, 2025, 11:11:41 PM »
As the title suggests I planted two pulasan trees 5 years ago, looks like they have both turned out to be male.... Does anyone know if a tree that makes male flowers will always have male only flowers? My gut instinct tells me it will as I have experience with rambutan trees that have pretty much the same looking flowers.

I dont have access to any other pulasan trees to collect bud wood or anything.  What would you do ? Would you just cut them both out and forget about pulasan? Or would you maybe cut one out leave one male and plant a few more seedlings and wait another 5 years to try get a female ???

Decisions decisions help me decide.

Can't you just graft a few female scions onto each tree and keep on rocking?

Coconut cream, you could if you had the scions but he plainly says that he has no access to any!!?

Tropo, that is very bad luck.  I would plant more pululan seedlings, pululan is worth it!
Plant at least 5.  With two only you have a 50% chance of failure.  If you don’t have the space then just plant them closer, see how it goes.

Well, since you don’t have access to budwood locally, I would cut one down and start scouring the rest of Australia for scions to graft onto the remaining tree. While you are looking, plant a couple more just in case.
There needs to be some sort of online “dating service” for these situations…

Good luck!

Not right now, but the opportunity could be right around the corner at the next fruit club meeting or instagram post  :D

Yeh thanks guys Ive never seen a pulasan fruit nor tasted one nor have I ever seen another pulasan tree !!!!! Yet I have two trees in my yard.

Yeh i think the best option might be like a few suggested chop down one leave one and plant some more seedling trees around. I do have room so I guess its just a restart on the 5 year wait.  Thankfully I have several bearing rambutan trees to keep me happy for now.

Even if i somehow was able to find someone with a bearing tree and able to get bud wood which is extremely unlikely I dont think pulasan is very easy to graft or top work similar to rambutan

If you find a bearing tree you might do some air layers.  Layers work well on pulusan and would be a lot easier than grafting for most people.  They very well could flower sooner than a graft.

I only have one pulasan seedling for sale in the nursery at the moment.

Hey mate would love to buy some seeds from you when you have some if possible.  Yeh the flowers are almost identical to rambutan very very easy to tell male from female
